About the time Charlotte Smith was opening her salon and spa business in the 100-block of East High Street, the Byrd-Haar-Bergman House was being relocated from its original location at 614 W. Main St. to 110 Bolivar St.

Ten years later, Smith was looking to relocate La Sienne Salon and Day Spa to another downtown Jefferson City location, but with better parking. And the historic Missouri-German architectural-style home had sat vacant all that time.

When Smith discovered it, she saw the potential in the brick shell worn by weather but solid in structure.

It took an entire rehabilitation, but 13 years later, La Sienne now sees up to 100 clients a day in the 2,200-square-foot, three-level building.

The 1997 city Landmark recipient also has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1997.
