Rice opens homeless outreach in Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) -- The New Life Evangelistic Center's lawsuit over a former federal building in Cape Girardeau is still pending, but founder Larry Rice is moving ahead with outreach to the homeless in the southeast Missouri town.

Earlier this year, Rice sought the old federal building in Cape Girardeau for use as a homeless shelter and free store. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services denied the application, prompting Rice to sue the federal government for control of the building.

The Southeast Missourian newspaper reports that the New Life Evangelistic Center will soon open a free store and homeless outreach center on Broadway in Cape Girardeau. A specific date has not been set, but the center is expected to open by Thanksgiving.
