Mid-Missouri woman in critical condition after Brazito crash

Published: Wednesday, November 11, 2009 5:34 AM CST
A Rocky Mount woman was listed in critical condition Tuesday night at University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia after she was involved in a two-vehicle accident that tied up traffic south of Jefferson City.

According to Missouri Highway Patrol reports, Dorothy Sturgis, 54, was going south on U.S. 54 at Pleasant Hill Road in Brazito around 4:20 p.m. Tuesday.

She collided with Vincel Wood, 82, Eldon, who pulled out in front of her from the median crossover, the patrol said. Wood's vehicle struck Sturgis's vehicle on the right side, causing Wood's vehicle to overturn and Sturgis's vehicle to travel off the right side of the road.

Wood, who was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was treated at the scene for minor injuries. Sturgis was not wearing a seat belt, the patrol said.

" I agree Mommy, age is not the issue. Crossovers are inherantly dangerous intersections. IMO the major problem is the highway speed of 70 that is usually driven between 75-80mph. Looking from the side a a car approaching makes it difficult to judge how much time you really have because you don't have the same depth perception that you would have if you approached from some type of ramp. I think MODOT engineers need to think outside of the box and experiment with some improvements to these intersections. I'm sure the problem is not unique to Missouri and that test data exists to prove what changes will improve safety. "

" HHHHMMM I'll stick my neck out there and say maybe age had nothing to do with it. Two of my relatives were killed on their way to the Lake 6 years ago by someone crossing over 54 and didn't look. Crossovers are DANGEROUS but it is the responsibility of the driver to pay attention. "
