ADT II returns home

Group worked to improve agriculture in Afghanistan

For nine days, two Vienna, Mo., brothers were able to catch up with each other in the Afghanistan province of Nangarhar.

Older brother Sgt. John Green returned home Friday with the Missouri National Guard's Agribusiness Development (ADT) Team II.

Before leaving Afghanistan, Green passed along some tips and warnings, like beware of the roads' reliability, to Cpl. Kevin Green, who is serving with the Guard's ADT III.

Both Greens volunteered for the mission, which helped provide basic agricultural services, food safety improvements and sustainability initiatives.

"I feel good about the mission," said John Green, who also has served in Iraq. "We made a positive impact on the locals."

Some day the Green brothers may be joined in military service by their youngest brother, 9-year-old Ryan Green, who was wearing a welcome home T-shirt under a kid-sized lieutenant colonel uniform at the ADT II welcome home ceremony held Friday in the state Capitol Rotunda.

For now, John Green was looking forward to deer hunting with Ryan and their mom's "real" tacos.

Tammy Davenport, of Chillicothe, is looking forward to feeding her son Sgt. Zachary Davenport, whom she thought looked pretty "skinny" the first moment she saw him coming down the Rotunda stairs. She's ready to fix him turkey, mashed potatoes and homemade noodles for Thanksgiving.

But Friday they were going to fulfill Zach's request for a steak dinner, said his wife Sabrina, of Ashland.

With their older son serving with the U.S. Marine Corps in Iraq and their youngest just enlisting, the Davenports appreciate what family time they have.

Many of those who served are parents, like the ADT II executive officer, Maj. Denise Wilkinson, who was tearfully grateful to be holding her youngest of five children with the others huddling close around their camouflage-clad mom.

While working with the local residents and Afghanistan leadership, ADT II was able to continue the work started by ADT I, which was the pilot program for the National Guard bureau.

The water management, including irrigation wells and solar cold storage, are one of the accomplishments she is proud of.

What Wilkinson tabbed as the greatest accomplishment, however, was every ADT II member returning safely.
