Voluntary manslaughter charge in Noel death

PINEVILLE, Mo. (AP) -- A Noel man has been charged with voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death last month of their son-in-law.

The Joplin Globe reports that 48-year-old James L. Patterson was charged Tuesday in the Sept. 7 shooting death of Marty E. Reece of Noel.

Patterson's wife, 45-year-old Kimberly D. Patterson, was arrested along with her husband after the shooting but charges had not been filed against her as of Tuesday.

Noel marshal Jacob Boles says Reece and 21-year-old Jindy Patterson were getting a divorce at the time of the shooting.

Court records show that Jindy Patterson took out a protection order against her husband in April. Boles said that order was in effect at the time of the shooting.

Authorities have not released a possible motive for the shooting.
