State warns of high methane levels near landfill

By The Associated Press
Published: Sunday, October 18, 2009 8:08 AM CDT
Residents living near the St. Louis Demolition Landfill are being warned about "dangerously high" levels of methane gas.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources said Friday recent tests show levels of methane at the landfill are well above the regulatory limit and, in some cases, are concentrated enough to be explosive.

The DNR has ordered St. Louis officials to notify all nearby homeowners and businesses of the potential threat and provide them with methane monitors.

They're also conducting further tests to determine if the gas is seeping off the landfill property and how to clean it up.

Regulators say the landfill was built before current landfill regulations but they are working with the city to close it.
