Pinnacle sends NJ casino official to St. Louis

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) -- Need more proof that it's going to be a long time before Pinnacle Entertainment builds its planned beach-themed casino in Atlantic City?

The company is transferring the head of the mothballed project to St. Louis to help run its casino there.

Kim Townsend will now be vice president and general manager of Lumiere Place in downtown St. Louis.

Pinnacle imploded the Sands Casino Hotel in October 2007 to make way for a new casino in the East Coast gambling mecca -- just before the economy tanked and competition from Pennsylvania slots parlors ramped up. The rubble has been cleared from the site, but the vast empty area of prime Boardwalk frontage has angered some city officials and residents.

"It's going to be a long time before anybody does anything in Atlantic City," Townsend said. "We are continuing to move along; everyone hopes the economy is going to change."

The Las-Vegas based company says the seaside casino remains on indefinite hold.

"Nothing has really changed," said company spokeswoman Pauline Yoshihashi. "We have always had a couple projects ahead of Atlantic City in the pipeline, and you need GMs to get them open and running."

Townsend will continue to oversee the Atlantic City project, which soon will involve demolition of a former post office building.

She will succeed Todd George, the current vice president and general manager at Lumiere Place. He will oversee the opening next spring of Pinnacle's new River City Casino in St. Louis County, Mo., scheduled to open in spring 2010.
