OUR OPINION: Independence breaks cycle of abuse

Abusers thrive on subjugation.

Dependence is a form of subjugation. The victim of domestic violence who depends on a spouse for money, shelter and food, health care and other necessities is less likely to flee an abusive household.

Helping victims develop independence and free themselves from the yoke of abuse is the goal of outreach advocacy by the Rape and Abuse Crisis Service (RACS).

That outreach effort received a massive boost this week with the announcement of a $140,554 grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health.

RACS plans to use the grant to hire an outreach advocate. In addition to paying for the salary, benefits and travel reimbursement, the money would cover promotional and education materials.

In addition to operating a shelter in the Jefferson City area, RACS serves an eight-county area — southern Boone and Callaway counties, and Morgan, Moniteau, Miller, Maries, Gasconade and Cole counties.

RACS Executive Director Jim Clardy is acutely aware of the problem. “Many of the victims RACS serves are not able to live independently of their abuser for many reasons. Some may not have worked and do not have the necessary financial resources, and many will return to their abuser for this reason.” he said.

The purpose of the outreach advocate is to reach out to those victims, traveling throughout Central Missouri and providing services, which could include assisting a job search, securing child care, opening a bank account and obtaining health care or legal services.

No one should feel forced to remain subjugated within a cycle of violence that threatens health and welfare.

Outreach advocacy will help foster independence and free victims from the trap of abuse.
