Callaway County will get a little help as it works through final phases to get an enhanced 911 system operational in the county.

The Missouri Department of Public Safety announced Tuesday that Callaway will be one of 19 recipients receiving a portion of $1.7 million of grants to speed emergency responses.

Callaway County received U.S. Department Telecommunications and Information Administration.

Call centers will use these funds to update their system to better serve the public. New systems will allow mapping of cell phone callers, identifying a caller's name and location in case of a dropped call and the ability to instantly replay recorded 911 calls to exact additional information.

"The majority of calls to 911 now come in from wireless and Internet-connected phones, but too often these mobile callers aren't sure of their exact location," Gov. Jay Nixon said in a press release. "This federal grant will help ensure that we can improve the ability to locate the emergency callers more quickly and promptly get Missourians the life-saving assistance they deserve."

Craighead noted that the a $35,000 grant that matches money it has put forward to improve dispatcher capabilities to locate someone calling with an emergency from a cellular phone.

"We're looking at getting a mapping system up and working, so when someone calls in we know precisely where they are," said Gabe Craighead, Callaway County Eastern District Commissioner. "We applied for this about a month ago to help up pay for finishing our addressing database and mapping system, which is what we have left to do in the system."

The money comes from a federal grant the state received from money set aside after Congress approved the Ensuing Needed Help Arrives Near Callers Employing 911 Act, or ENHANCE 911, that was approved in 2004. The money specifically comes from the Callaway County EOC has applied for numerous grants and is happy that this particular one will put them one step closer to finishing updates to its system, which will help emergency responders respond quicker and more accurately.

"Everything is close to finished, and with this grant it just puts us closer," Craighead said. "We were going to have to put off finishing this mapping system for a year unless we could find some way to fund it, but with this we should be up and running fairly quick once this comes through."

The Public Safety Department also said Maries County would get $33,500 and Moniteau County will receive $16,266.

No other Mid-Missouri counties were listed in the department's news release.
