Asa Senger's aunt, Hazel, who was thought dead, returns home in 1876, bearing secrets of a past everyone else had purposely forgotten.

Through Aunt Hazel's stories, Asa learns the truth about his family and ultimately himself.

First-time author Thomas Maltman takes readers on the two-decade journey through Hazel's story in his book "Night Birds."

The historical fiction piece begins with Hazel's journey from Missouri to the Minnesota prairie where the Senger family befriend the banished and neighboring Dakota Indians.

Maltman's book has been chosen as the 2009 Capital READ selection at Missouri River Regional Library.

Through a series of events, the community will have a chance to meet with and talk to the author Oct. 15-17 in Jefferson City and Linn.
