Group hosting clean-up on Missouri River

Published: Wednesday, September 16, 2009 3:18 PM CDT
Missouri River Relief is hosting a river clean-up on the Missouri River at the state capital from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday rain or shine.

Headquarters will be the Carl Noren Boat Access in north Jefferson City. Volunteers will be shuttled to trash-strewn spots along the river by boats from agencies that include the Missouri Department of Conservation and US Fish and Wildlife Service.

They will be supplied with gloves, trash bags, life preservers and water. Each volunteer will receive a T-shirt and a reusable water bottle. Workers should wear work clothes, rugged mud boots or tennis shoes (no flip-flops.) Sunglasses and sunscreen are suggested.

After workers are shuttled back to shore they will receive a complimentary lunch. There will also be a "Git that Garbage" trash contest for the biggest, coolest and weirdest trash.

The clean-up is sponsored by grants from Mid-Missouri Solid Waste Management District, Missouri Department of Conservation, Conservation Federation of Missouri, Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation, Central Bank, Wal Mart and Missouri America Water.
