Government takes input on river ecosystem plan

YANKTON, S.D. (AP) -- The federal government has finished the first step in a plan aimed at recovering or preventing further declines of native fish and wildlife and their habitats along the Missouri River and major tributaries.

The agency concluded 10 public meetings over the last six weeks to take input on the Missouri River Ecosystem Restoration Plan and Environmental Impact Statement.

States that are a part of the project include Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and Missouri.

A Corps of Engineers spokesman said the purpose of the meetings was to get a good idea of what is important to people so the agency can use that information to shape the scope of the study.
