University student dies after falling from balcony

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A 19-year-old sophomore from the Chicago area has died after falling from the balcony of his 12th floor apartment on the Saint Louis University campus.

The university said in a statement that Nirmam Vasanwala, a biology major, died at 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

St. Louis police and the university said they found no evidence of foul play.

Police said a resident assistant was investigating a complaint of a disturbance on the floor when he encountered Vasanwala in his apartment and followed him into his room. The resident assistant said he saw a sleeping roommate and then found Vasanwala lying on the ground below his balcony. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The university said this was the first case of death or serious injury resulting from a fall from an on-campus residential building.
