Initiative helps parishioners explore catechism, faith

Worship is sweeter and a relationship with God is deeper when one realizes the purpose behind their faith tradition.

"Why Catholic?" will help parishioners through a process of curiosity and discovery in "why do I believe what I believe?" said Justo Gonzalez, Diocese director of Hispanic and cross-cultural ministries.

The four-year journey will begin this month for many Diocese of Jefferson City parishes. It explores the catechism, emphasizing Catholic beliefs, worship and sacraments, moral formation and a call to prayer.

Some Catholics sit dutifully in a pew for an hour each week and others felt they fulfilled their obligation by attending years of lessons as a child. Even others may imitate what their elders modeled without knowing why they're doing it.

This discipleship effort will reveal through the church's catechism that a life of faith can be richer and more meaningful.

"I did that on my own," said Patty Skain, coordinator for Why Catholic at Immaculate Conception. "I was a cradle Catholic, left the church and then came back."

Skain said she didn't understand the why of many things in the Catholic traditions. But when she experienced a personal conversion, her faith began to grow and the "why" began to make sense.

"It's an amazing discovery," Skain said. "That's what I want other people to have."

A void in Catholic fundamentals in the last several decades might be the cause for such a reminder, said Carolyn Saucier, associate director of religious education.
