Haedo finishes first in Jefferson City

No, they're not in the Tour of Missouri, but Janet Wear-Enloe, near, and Ed Reser, middle, battle for position in the Celebrity Bicycle Race Wednesday evening through downtown Jefferson City. UPDATE: J.J. Haedo of Saxobank is Stage 4 winner. Thor Hushovd of Cervelo finishes 2nd; Dario Cataldo of Quick Step 3rd.

Published: Thursday, September 10, 2009 6:38 PM CDT
Jefferson City, one of only three cities that has hosted the Tour of Missouri all three years the race has been in existence, will serve as the finish to Thursday's Stage 4.

Starting in St. James at 2 p.m., it will wind its way more than 100 miles to downtown Jefferson City with an expected finish between 5:45-6:30 p.m.

"It's a great group of roads leading into the finish," said Brad Huff, who rides for Team Jelly Belly. "And it's a great finishing circuit."

That circuit concludes with a steep climb up High Street between the Truman Building and St. Peters Church to the finish line just past the Capitol Building.

Rabobank teammates Boy Van Poppel and Michael Van Stayen finished 1-2 at the stage finish last year.

Also included in the stage are sprint sections in Belle and Taos.

Among the teams that will participate in the Tour are Astana, Cervelo Test Team, Columbia-HTC (the defending Tour of Missouri team champion), Garmin-Slipstream, Liquigas, Saxo Bank and Quickstep. Those squads combined to win 14 of the 21 stage's in July's Tour de France.

In addition to Jelly Belly, other U.S.-based squads participating include Bissell Pro Cycling Team, BMC Racing, Colavita/ Sutter Home presented by Cooking Light, Kelly Benefit Strategies, Ouch presented by Maxxis and Team Type 1. Planet Energy, based in Canada, is the final entry.

The final three stages of the Tour of Missouri will be an individual time trial Friday in Sedalia, a race from Chillicothe to St. Joseph on Saturday and a conclusion Sunday with a circuit in Kansas City.

Tour events Thursday

Stage 4 of the Tour of Missouri will finish Thursday near the Capitol in Jefferson City.

The stage is scheduled to end between 5:45-6:30 p.m. on High Street. The awards ceremony will follow on the Capitol south lawn.

For street closings, see the list here.

Other Thursday events downtown include:

* 3:30 p.m. -- a stunt bike performance by the St. Louis Sprockets near the finish line.

* 4 p.m. -- a pep rally featuring the Lincoln University band on the Capitol steps.

* 4:30 p.m. -- the championship race featuring local celebrities.

* 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. -- expected finish of Stage 4.

Online Coverage

Several online resources are available to follow each day's race.

Live video coverage and race tracking at http://www.tourofmissouritracker.com

Complete video coverage with commentary begins approximately 2 hours before the race's finish. Raw video without commentary is transmitted before that coverage.

Also note that the tour map showing the progress of the "break" (the cyclists in front far ahead of the pack) and the "peloton" (the pack) can be inaccurate at times.

Live blogging during the race is available at http://velonews.com/live/tour-of-missouri. Watching the entries on this blog, which are filed live as the race unfolds, is a good way to track progress before video commentary begins. And a good way to supplement video coverage after commentary begins.

The official site at http://www.tourofmissouri.com contains additional features, including a fan zone.

Jefferson City site's at www.jctourofmissouri.com outlines festivities in Jefferson City.

News Tribune sports (NTsports) will tweet some about the race on Twitter at http://twitter.com/ntsports.

It's not just good for Jefferson City, it's good for Missouri. They try to use different communities for starts and finishes, from year to year, to spread the benefits.

Today I met folks from Ohio biking the Katy Trail who got to see the time trials in Sedalia. They were very impressed.

They plan to come back.

Sorry I should have resisted but didn't. :) "

pioneers wrote on Sep 12, 2009 4:46 PM:

" Oh! Bck, thanks so much for reminding me of 2 other positive things about the race:

1. We had Jefferson City citizens spending their money in Jefferson City, rather than going to the Lake, Columbia, Branson or other places to spend their money.

2. Potholes? Sure we have potholes. But one of the race employees told me she was very impressed with Missouri roads. She said our roads are better than what they usually race on. Perhaps we don't realize that our roads are better than what other states have. "

" Yes, I am sure that this investment is going to turn into the US version of the Tour de France. I also have a damaged bridge or two that I'd like to sell ya, anyone interested?
Look, I enjoy the race coming through as much as the next person, but as soon as other states start doing this, ours will be just another race through the cowtowns and hills. Which do you think we be more difficult or more fun to watch, the Tour of Missouri or the Tour of Colorado?
As far as earning money throughout the state, who's buying anything? The Jefferson City area probably made more money off of Jefferson City citizens than from people that come from other places. "

So sorry. "

pioneers wrote on Sep 12, 2009 1:26 PM:

" Binging the Tour of Missouri back is an investment. We're in on the ground floor. Missouri and California are the only two states with this type of race.

Biking appears to be growing in popularity. Colorado wants a Tour of Colorado. Supporters of a Tour of Colorado visit Missouri to see how ours does - more out-of-state people spending money here. I saw signs for a Tour of Utah.

If we continue this race, the Tour of Missouri will be to America what the Tour de France is to Europe and the world - the race to be in, to watch and to attend.

Biking and bike racing will only increase in popularity. Let's be smart investors this time. "

" Editor, I agree that the math is hypothetical. That is the problem. We are in a dismal economic situation right now, and governments at all levels will be forced to raise taxes or to continue cutting services and programs. We've lost nearly 2000 jobs in Jefferson City due to government cut backs already. For dollars this large, the math needs to be a sure-thing. Again, I am not down on the bike race, I am down on tax dollars used to host it. It does not seem to be a prudent action in the current economic situation, and if it were such a great deal for investment, private interestes would jump at the opportunity. "

online_editor wrote on Sep 12, 2009 5:07 AM:

" boscoe: Many local jurisdictions levy 2% local sales tax, so if you calculated using 6.225% (2 cents over the state tax), the income would be a tad more than the outlay. Now, granted, some food items are taxed at 1% less, but on the other hand, we haven't calculated revenue from gas and lodging taxes. Therefore, *IF* one puts faith in the $25 million figure, it's conceivable to assume from your methodology that the tax coming back to government entities could be at least equal to the state outlay. Lot of if's there, but I'm just sayin' the math is rather hypothetical. "

bradinthesand wrote on Sep 11, 2009 10:16 PM:

" All, this race is nothing other than a win win for the city and the state. If this race is not picked up again b/c the state wants to save $1.5 million, the leadership needs to be voted out of office. The coverage this race gets brings so much positive attention to the state. This is like a pro baseball, or football or basketball team coming to your home town to play in front of your respective town. These cyclist are the best in the world. If your biggest compaint is the traffic, you really need to get a life and see the big picture. This event brings in revenue, enjoyment and is just a great thing for Missouri. "

Now for some numbers. I think you'll get different numbers from different sources. The St. Louis Business Journal on 9/8/09 reported, the 2007 Tour had a total economic impact of $26.2 million and the 2008 Tour had a total economic impact of $26.2 million.

The MU Tourism Economic Research Initiative reported that there were total expenditures of $21,098,043.64 during the 2007 tour. "

On another note, just generally to no one person in particular, let's all remember to keep personal sniping out of the mix. "

pioneers wrote on Sep 11, 2009 4:03 PM:

As for your statement that I'm happy because one hotel was full, that's the only one I mentioned. And it was full for a week. I spoke to someone who worked for the race. They were placed in hotels all over town: Doubletree, Truman Hotel, Best Western, and others. Those three are the ones I remember. Her list had about six motels listed where racers and their support staff would be staying. "

Boxer doesn't really know what the economic impact was, and she doesn't have a clue as to how much the state spent in total for the bike race.

The state contributin $1.5 million through the Division of Tourism to get $25,000.000 spent in this state seems pretty positive to me.

And then there is the tax revenue on that $25,000,000 that goes to the state.

The money that people working for the race, the racers, their support staff, people following it, on and on, spend here is a good thing.

Boscoe, you'd rather have casinoes and brothels generate income, I know. But I'd rather have an international bike race generate income for our state. "
