State investigating sewage spill into lake

LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. (AP) -- State environmental officials are looking into a raw sewage spill that threatens a popular Blue Springs lake days before Labor Day.

The Kansas City Star reports that the Missouri Department of Natural Resources was notified Friday that raw sewage was draining into Prairie Lee Lake in Lee's Summit. Officials say pumps at a nearby pump station were turned off for maintenance and had been mistakenly left off overnight, allowing the sewage to overflow.

The exact amount of sewage released wasn't available.

Officials were concerned Saturday that the sewage may have also seeped into Lake Jacomo, which is connected to Prairie Lee Lake. That might require authorities to post warning signs along some beaches.
