Guerrero's hit gives Angels 2-1 win over KC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Jered Weaver allowed one run over seven innings and Vladimir Guerrero hit a two-run single in the eighth inning off Kansas City's beleaguered bullpen, lifting the Los Angeles Angels to a 2-1 victory over the Royals.

Weaver (14-5) kept it close early against Royals fill-in starter Robinson Tejeda, scattering nine hits. Tejeda allowed a hit in 5 1-3 scoreless innings, then had to watch another bullpen meltdown.

Royals relievers walked eight in three innings after the right-hander left -- three by Jamey Wright (1-5) -- and dodged two jams before Guerrero came through with the run-scoring single in the eighth. Brian Fuentes worked the ninth for his 38th save in 43 chances.

Kansas City had 11 hits, the Angels three.

Tejeda got the start when Gil Meche was scratched due to shoulder fatigue.

Though he's been a starter before -- 47 combined with Philadelphia, Texas and Kansas City -- Tejeda didn't look the part, pitching exclusively from the stretch. He had no problem adjusting to pitching early instead of late, retiring 15 straight after a one-out single in the first inning, striking out the side in the second.

Tejeda finally wore out after 83 pitches, leaving after walking two with one out in the sixth inning. He allowed one hit and struck out six.

That, of course, meant handing the ball over to the relievers.

Kansas City's bullpen has been a disaster-in-waiting all season, with baseball's highest ERA (5.19) and worst percentage of inherited runners scored (45). And it was missing one of its most productive members: Tejeda.

No need to guess what happened next, right?

Yes, it happened again. It just took a little longer than usual.

Kyle Farnsworth survived a bases-loaded at-bat by Guerrero in the sixth, making the crowd gulp by throwing off his back foot on the inning-ending comebacker.

Wright worked out a jam in the seventh with a strike out, throw out -- Mike Napoli swinging, Kendry Morales caught stealing third -- then created another by walking two the next inning.

In came John Bale. One pitch, he was gone. The right-hander caught his cleat in the dirt and had to be helped off the field, limping on his right side.

Roman Colon replaced Bale and promptly walked Bobby Abreu, giving Guerrero a second bases-loaded chance. As the crowd buzzed with an impending sense of doom, Guerrero lined a two-run single just inside third base, igniting a chorus of boos inside Kauffman Stadium.

Weaver gave the Angels a chance. The right-hander allowed three hits to Mike Jacobs, Alberto Callaspo's run-scoring triple in the fourth inning and not much else.

NOTES: Broadcaster Buddy Blattner, who died at 89 on Friday, was the original play-by-play voice of the Royals. ... Kansas City leads the majors with 45 triples. ... Abreu has four hits his past 33 at-bats after going 0 for 2.
