Burn victims still hospitalized

Published: Wednesday, September 2, 2009 3:43 PM CDT
The Mid-Missouri couple burned in a grease fire Sunday evening remained hospitalized Wednesday morning at the University of Missouri-Columbia Hospital.

Abby Stuenkel remained in serious condition Wednesday, while Tyler Schwartze had been upgraded to fair condition.

Both received second- and third-degree burns about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, when a burning pan of grease "flashed" as they were attempting to pour it over a balcony at the Park Place Condominiums at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Stuenkel was flown directly to the Columbia Hospital, while Schwartze was transferred there after first being treated at Lake Ozark Regional Hospital, Osage Beach.

The Osage Beach Fire District's fire marshal said Tuesday afternoon the investigation was finished, with "nothing suspicious" found in the case.

The condo unit suffered little to no damage.

" Every kitchen should have a fire extinguisher in it. And try to smother the fire with a lid...If the fire has no air...no more fire. I am sorry for the victims. I wish their treatment godspeed. "

" Mommy: It was deleted. I said "orphaned," but I simply mean that whole thread is gone since there's no story page for comments to be paired with. My error played a role in how it happened, but since the discussion was almost all sniping, it might as well stay gone. And now on with our show... "

" Lake Sun Leader, states that they were cooking and the grease caught fire. That sounds like they paniced and tried to get it out of the house the quickest route possible. There but for the grace of God go I. Could happen to anyone. Some are just unlucky or lucky however you look at it. "

" In this thread, personal sniping. In addition, this is the story page that should have been posted on Wednesday all along. I initially goofed and put a day-old version of the story up because I got confused (didn't work Tuesday) and grabbed a few of the wrong files. Any comments attached to that outdated page were orphaned when it was removed. That flub was totally my mistake for which I apologize. However, that thread also consisted largely of personal sniping. " I noticed yesterday that a lot of people claimed to be friends of this girl. No one else has mentioned it so I will. Central Bank has set up an account to help her out. There is more info in the Lake Sun leader if anyone would like to donate. "
