School conducts dengue fever vaccine trial

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Researchers at Saint Louis University are studying a vaccine that could protect people against dengue fever.

The vaccine was developed by Hawaii Biotech Inc. to fight the potentially deadly infection, which is spread by mosquitoes.

Researchers say 100 million people worldwide contract dengue fever, often in tropical countries. There is currently no vaccine or specific treatment for the illness, whose symptoms resemble severe flu.

The university is recruiting 16 healthy volunteers for the study. It lasts about nine months and includes eight visits to the school's Center for Vaccine Development.
