Team Type 1 member visits Jefferson City

Published: Friday, August 21, 2009 1:26 PM CDT
When Matt Brooks was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (juvenile onset diabetes) at nearly 8 years old, he never imagined he would serve one day as an inspiration to the thousands of other Type 1 diabetics across the country.

For the last two years, Brooks -- a resident of Akron, Ohio -- has been part of Team Type 1, a series of cycling teams whose goal is to spread awareness about diabetes. Although he has a definite passion for the sport, he also enjoys the interactions he has with kids across the country in hospitals and clinics.

"We met this 9-year-old boy at a hospital in Tennessee who really inspired me," Brooks recalled during a recent visit to Jefferson City Medical Group. "We got to spend about 30 minutes with him. It was great."
