US man says no regrets about Myanmar jailing

By MARIA SUDEKUM FISHER, Associated Press Writer

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — American John Yettaw has arrived in his home state of Missouri with no regrets about his improbable odyssey to the home of Myanmar’s detained democracy leader, a decision that landed them both in prison.

Yettaw spoke Wednesday to The Associated Press before he boarded a plane from Chicago to Springfield, Mo. — his final stop on his journey home. He sat in the last row of the commercial flight and didn’t speak to reporters.

The 53-year-old Missouri man was sentenced to hard labor for visiting the home of Myanmar democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi. Yettaw was deported Sunday after a U.S. senator intervened.

Yettaw has testified that he swam to Suu Kyi’s house to warn her that he had a vision she would be assassinated.

He tells the AP that if he had to do it again, he would “a hundred times to save her life.â€
