Lelie gives Chiefs fresh veteran legs at wide receiver

Published: Tuesday, August 18, 2009 2:50 PM CDT
KANSAS CITY (AP) -- The Kansas City receiving corps is taking on a veteran look.

The Chiefs on Monday signed Ashley Lelie, a sevenyear pro. He joins Amani Toomer, a 13-year veteran who signed on Aug. 4.

Lelie, in stints with Denver, Atlanta, San Francisco and Oakland, has caught 217 passes for 3,749 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Wide receiver has been one of many problem areas for Kansas City in recent years. Dwayne Bowe, their top their first-round pick three years ago, has spent most of training camp in the coaches' doghouse. He did have five catches for 70 yards in Saturday's preseason opener.

Lelie was the Broncos' first-round pick out of Hawaii in 2002.

"I think he's healthy, he's a little different from anything we have," said coach Todd Haley. "He's a long, lean guy with some potential top-end speed. So I thought a change to get someone in here who's a little different from what we have is important."

The 29-year-old Lelie said he's ready to go.

"Definitely. Especially because I'm so fresh," he said. "I haven't really had any major injuries. My body still hasn't been banged up. So I still feel like I'm 23 out there."

The Chiefs also waived wide receiver Jeff Webb, who played 31 games in three seasons, catching 36 passes for 382 yards and a touchdown.
