2 Republicans may challenge Mo. Rep. Skelton

By The Associated Press
Published: Tuesday, August 18, 2009 8:14 AM CDT
Two Missouri Republicans are gearing up for potential challenge to longtime Democratic Congressman Ike Skelton.

Former state House member Vicky Hartzler and state Sen. Bill Stouffer both have filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission that allows them to begin raising money.

Hartzler, of Harrisonville, says she definitely is running. Hartzler plans to hold town hall meetings on health care Thursday in Marshfield and Lebanon.

Stouffer, of Napton, already has assembled campaign aides but a spokeswoman says he still is exploring a congressional bid.

Skelton first was elected to the U.S. House in 1976. His district stretches from suburban Kansas City east to Jefferson City and south to several counties near Springfield. Skelton is chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.

" This is GREAT news. Skelton has been in office TOO long. I have voted for Skelton in the past, but come to realize that he has stopped representing the people of his district and basicly does what the Democratic leadership tells him to do. He also apparantly can not take the heat fron the town hall meetings so he needs to get out of the kitchen. "
