Linn MO - Linn State Technical College hosted the Summer Transportation Institute in conjunction with the Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla, Missouri.

"This camp provides a wide array of educational opportunities, not only about transportation careers, but also about transportation issues that affect us all as citizens," stated Diane Heckemeyer, LSTC Construction & Civil Technology Department Chair and camp coordinator.

Over 20 high school sophomores, juniors and seniors from Florida, Illinois, Missouri and Tennessee, attended the two week long institute sponsored by the US Department of Transportation. Students learned a variety of aspects of the transportation industry through hands-on laboratories, seminars and field trips.

"I really like how this camp opened my eyes to the many different career fields in transportation available to me as a young woman," commented Melody Franks, a senior at Nixa High School in Nixa, Missouri.

On LSTC's campus students visited Automotive Technology, Aviation Maintenance, Construction & Civil Technology, and Heavy Equipment Operations to participate in activities and learn more about jobs related to that program.

"Even though this is my second year returning to camp, I still learned a lot of new things," stated Micah Johnson, a junior at O'Hara High School in Kansas City, Missouri. "I can't wait to get home to tell my friends about the great times I had at camp. It gets better every year!"

Field trips included visits to Fort Leonard Wood, the Museum of Transportation in Kirkwood, the Missouri State Highway Patrol Headquarters and various offices at the Missouri Department of Transportation in Jefferson City.

"Before coming to this camp, I had no idea of the expanse of jobs, laws and work it takes to put all our cars, trucks, and busses on the road," said Jennifer Bennett, a senior at Illinois Math & Science Academy in Aurora, Illinois.

Linn State Technical College has campuses in Linn, Jefferson City and Mexico. For more information about LSTC, visit www.linnstate.edu <http://www.linnstate.edu/> .
