Kansas City man killed when rock hits SUV in Colorado

Published: Sunday, August 16, 2009 10:06 AM CDT
BASALT, Colo. (AP) -- A Kansas City, Mo., man returning from vacation with his family was killed when a boulder crashed through the windshield of his sport utility vehicle.

Authorities say his wife was able coast the vehicle to a safe stop by steering from the passenger's seat.

The accident occurred Friday along Colorado Route 82 in Snowmass Canyon, about 15 miles west of Aspen.

The Colorado State Patrol said a boulder about the size of a briefcase fell off the mountain and onto 45-year-old Thomas Murphy, who was driving the 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe. He was knocked unconscious and his wife, Jennifer Murphy, put the SUV in neutral and steered it down the highway.

Sgt. Rich Armstrong said the SUV was traveling downhill at about 55 mph when it was hit, and it took about a mile for it to come to a stop. The SUV weaved as it made its way down the highway, prompting some witnesses to call 911 to report an erratic driver.

The Murphys' three sons were in the back seat. The boulder also hit their 11-year-old son, but he wasn't seriously injured.
