Skelton: Army will modernize Whiteman helicopter

Published: Thursday, August 6, 2009 2:04 PM CDT
LEXINGTON, Mo. (AP) -- Rep. Ike Skelton says the U.S. Army has approved a plan to modernize AH-64A Apache Attack helicopters used by a Missouri National Guard battalion at Whiteman Air Force Base.

The Democrat from Missouri announced Thursday that the helicopters assigned to the Guards 1/135th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion will be refitted with the Longbow, the Army's primary attack helicopter.

He says the upgrades will begin arriving at Whiteman in October 2011. A total fleet of 24 helicopters -- eight more than currently stationed at the base -- are scheduled to arrive by May 2012.

Skelton also announced that the Air Force 498th Munitions Maintenance Group Headquarters staff -- about 12 people -- will be transferred to Whiteman from Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., in the next few months.
