The Cole County Commission approved action for members of the victim services team to apply for a $10,000 grant that would improve the response to violent crimes against women.

The Services Training Officers Prosecutors (STOP) Violence Against Women Grant Program is designed to strengthen prosecution strategies against offenders as well as serve as a prevention tool.

Currently, offenders who enter a rehabilitation program as a condition on bond/parole must pay $40 per week for 27 weeks.

" The United Way is an organization that will redirect your donation to particular agencies--you could call them to find out which agency that you may want your money to go to. And the money stays here in our area. "

" Another point about the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center is that they are very professional and CONFIDENTIAL people. "

" I'm sure that they could go to the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center here in town. They truly reach out when people are hurting. Heck, I feel like I'm their spokesperson, but they really help. If people want to donate their money to a good cause, this is a good place to start. Also the Central Missouri Food Bank, The Samaritan Center, The United Way and The Salvation Army are worthy causes that need money. I don't have riches in excess but I always give money to these organizations. If you can't give money, just donate a little of your time. A kind word speaks volumes when someone is feeling low. And a helping hand can help lift-someone-up-when-life-has-pushed-them-down. "

" Good comments! Does anyone know of resources for MEN here in mid mo? I know someone who could use any help that is out there. "

" up with his junk about how 'sorry' he was and how I 'made' him hit me and how he was 'going to change'--I don't take any junk from anyone anymore and took lessons to defend myself. I donate money to the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center all the time because not everyone is as strong or assertive as I was.

Yeah--He WAS sorry--Sorry when he was the hit-ee instead of the hitter!! "

" Thank you, Boscoe--you are right about victims empowering themselves-but they have to figure it out for themselves. A million people can tell the victim to get out of the situation but until they get tired of being treated like a punching bag, preaching to them is a waste of time. Sometimes you have to make a believer out of some people and that jerk THOUGHT he had me scared of him. Well, he thought wrong, because he zigged when he should have zagged when I tagged his behind with that stun gun. Now, I know that I shouldn't encourage people to go out a buy a stun gun because I don't know the law pertaining to them--but I got fed "

" Good for you, MissHoneyBee!

Every woman and abused man should have a can of bear mace (available from HOB or Bass Pro) and not be afraid to use it on their assailant. If people would stop tolerating abuse, most of it would end very quickly.

The victims don't know how empowered they actually are- they can stop their attackers much easier and more effectively than law enforcement ever can. All it takes is the will to fight back, and a few tools such as a stun gun, bear mace, or conceal and carry.

Don't be a victim to either an abuser, or an ineffective law enforcement and justice system. "

" Thank you, gofish--I've been saying THAT for years. And if you are a victim--help is sometimes hard to get. I went into a local police station (not JCPD) several years ago--after a SEVERE beat down and got no help what-so-ever. They took some pictures but I was told that it was my word against his. I took manners into my own hands a few weeks later when he started in on me again--I brought a stun gun, you know, the kind that actually has to make contact with the body. When he threw his first punch, I stuck him in his torso with the stun gun...Dropped him like a rock!!! I ended up with two black eyes but he-NEVER-bothered-me-again!---Sometimes-you-gotta-fight-fire-with-fire--and-fight-dirty---I-DID!!!! "

" And where would the grant to stop domestic violence against MEN be? Why does DV have to be so sexist?

DV people will tell you that it's b/c 90% of DV is man against women and that is such BS. Men don't report, men don't get help. It's too embarrassing. Most don't want to take the bantering about why they got beat up by a woman. Monsters come in all genders.

If the truth were known, the real split would be closer to 50-50. Same goes for sexual abuse. Men go to prison, women get probation. Gender descrimination is no better than racism or homophobia. "
