Missouri man sentenced in steroids smuggling case

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A southwest Missouri man has been sentenced to 20 months in federal prison for a scheme to smuggle anabolic steroids into the country.

Thirty-year-old Mikal Gunn Schrage of Nixa was also ordered to pay more than $333,000 in fines, forfeitures and other penalties. He was sentenced Monday.

Schrage pleaded guilty in July 2008 to conspiracy and money laundering.

Federal prosecutors said Schrage imported anabolic steroids in raw form from China under false names between November 2004 and September 2007. He turned the substances into anabolic steroids and sold them over the Internet without a license and in counterfeit bottles made to appear they came from Mexico.

His arrest was part of an international investigation into illegal manufacture and trafficking of anabolic steroids.
