For about a year Eric Stone never slept well. He was waking up with headaches, struggling to fight off sleep mid-afternoon and finding himself napping soon after getting home from work.

About three years ago, Stone decided he needed help. So he went to see his physician, who was encouraging him to take better care of himself, and a sleep study was ordered.

During the sleep study, it was decided that Stone had obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

OSA is a condition where excessive tissue in the throat obstructs the airway when a person is lying down sleeping, making it hard to breathe. Over time ,the labored breathing can cause heart problems.

Stone's OSA was determined to be so drastic that he received a CPAP machine the same day, and since has experienced better nights of sleep.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy uses a machine to help a person who has OSA breathe more easily during sleep. A CPAP machine increases air pressure in the throat so the airway does not collapse when a person breathe in.

Stone's ability to get a better night's rest is not just due to the CPAP.

"Getting my sleep figured out was really the first step in me getting healthier," said Stone, one of the Mid-Missouri Healthy Challengers who has dedicated himself to the three-month, healthy living challenge.
