Capital 4 Theaters going dark for good

By Jeff Haldiman - jhaldiman@newstribune.com
Published: Wednesday, August 5, 2009 3:39 PM CDT
Despite the announcement Tuesday that he would close the Capital 4 Theaters at the end of the month, the owner feels it will lead to better offerings for movie goers in the Jefferson City area. Bob Goodrich, president of Goodrich Theaters, said the reason for the closure is to convert their nearby Capital 8 Theaters into digital cinema. The last day for Capital 4 to show movies will be Thursday, Aug. 27. “No one is losing their job,” said Theater Manager Bob Wilkins. There are 64 people who work at both businesses, and Wilkins said those who have worked at Capital 4 simply will be shifted to the Capital 8. “We’ve been running more of our first-run movies at Capital 8 and it just makes sense to try and improve that facility,” Wilkins said. Goodrich, which operates 28 theaters in Missouri and three other states, plans to install at least one digital projection in one of its auditoriums at Capital 8 within the next four to six months, to offer 3-D projection. Right now, the closest 3-D projector in Mid-Missouri is in Columbia.

“We’d like to expand Capital 8,” Wilkins said. “We want to improve seating in all the auditoriums.

“We don’t want to have to worry about not being able to run any of the first-run movies that are out there.”

Wilkins said Goodrich had no problems with the mall manager, General Growth Properties. The theater’s lease expires in a few months. “Capital 4 was just getting old,” he said. The theater was opened in 1979 and Goodrich bought Capital 4 and 8 from Dickinson Theaters in 1999. Goodrich recently closed two theaters in Michigan as it worked to offer more digital locations. The company opened a third IMAX location, and first all-digital complex, last year in Indianapolis. Wilkins said the move to close the Capital 4 definitely was not over a slow-down in people going to the movies. “Last year, we sold around 300,000 tickets,” Wilkins said. “So far this year we’ve sold over 190,000. Even in tough economic times, people want to be entertained.”

" This town is going south. Three years ago there weren't monthly shootings. Three years ago we weren't talking about the mall leaving. If people in this town want to give up, so be it. But we really need to think about the town that WE live in. Let's not cave. We NEED JOBS! I see people working hard at the mall everyday. That's a salary. That's baby food. Why isn't the city council looking at this more, and garbage less? "

" What killed the mall?

Well, its dirty. It smells bad. There are no shops. The play area is scary. There is an arcade for goodness sake ( is this 1975?). It wasn't well air conditioned, well lit, or well attended. The people who work in the mall have a blank, sad stare. Even security (which there was an awful lot of) looked a little out of it.

I have to be honest, I have been to the mall in Columbia. It was busy, clean, and a happy time. And the sad thing is, I would rather shop local any day! "

" Its sad to see a long time business close down, but such is the way of things. We now have pay for view at home, Netflix online, and for some like me, a home theater. Why bother to go out and spend tons of money, when I can watch a movie in the comfort of my own home for a fraction of the cost. So think about it, who killed the mall, and other shops??? I say its the internet. And your opinion is???? "

" The holts summit theaters new management is really bad, we had a birthday party there this year and after the party tried to re-charge us for the party. When I was leaving I was told by the person workin gthere that we stilled owed over 50 dollars. My kids were outside so I told them where to go. There prices I have noticed via the web site have gone up for admission I noticed awhile back. "

" Took a drive a couple of weeks ago and went up to Sedalia to the movie theatre up there...loved it..for me to drive from California takes about the same amount of time...so with the stadium seating larger seats and excellent surround sound it was great and cheaper too...wont be going back to JC to watch movies when I can go up to Sedalia and see stuff cheaper, shop cheaper and the people seem to be friendly "

" We like Fulton too. Great atmosphere, what with the college kids. Its amazing how small towns can be so up to date with things when a college is around. HS was under the new management when my husband went. "

boscoe wrote on Aug 7, 2009 8:18 AM:

" Gotta teach your kids to stand up for themselves or else they will become dependent and/or abused.

I've been to Summit Theaters several times before ownership changed. I loved it- cheaper, friendlier, better popcorn, cleaner, etc. Friend told me it has slipped a bit with the new management- is that true?

Fulton Theaters get most of my business. So much better than JC's- clearer and brighter picture and sound, stadium seating, better popcorn, cleaner, cheaper, etc. Home cooking place on 54 by sonic and pizzaslut is best place to eat in central missouri, Fulton businesses ROCK! "

" It sure isn't fancy, mommy but have you ever taken your child to the theater in Holts Summit? It shows the exact same movies as JC and is cheaper. Even the popcorn is cheaper. My husband was the ONLY one in the theater one summer afternoon. It was really funny. The girl fixed his popcorn and told him that his theater was ready for him. I know they don't have afternoon showings in the winter but I think they still have them in the summer. I know of a lady with several kids that would bring them over here just because it was so much cheaper than JC. You need a second mortgage to take kids tothe "

" My mom and I tried taking my son when he was 3 to a kid movie at the Mall (the free one's they put on in the summer). We got our food, then walked in the theater and yeah, the place was pretty full, but so many people were "saving seats" for others that hadn't even pulled in the parking lot. I said something to the usher who just looked at me like I spoke a different language. After asking numerous people to please move their stuff, we were told time and time again no. I marched back to the food people and demanded my money back because even though there were probably 50 seats left, no one would let us-sit-down.We-left-and-ended-up-at-Target-and-I-just-ended-up-buying-my-son-the-same-movie.Haven't-been-back-sence. I went to some great movies there and kissed a number of ladies in my youth there,.. Memories,... Now that's over, tear it down. "

" Yet another huge nail in the coffin for Capital Mall.

Someone please get some life support for the mall or else put it out of its misery.

General Growth has worked hard to kill the Capital Mall. Can some other developer please buy it, clean it up, remodel it, and get some good stores and community events back at the mall?

The theater closing is a huge loss for the mall- so much potential going to waste. Maybe someone will buy the Capital Four and clean it up, remodel it, and make it into an artsy upscale theater. That would be COOL and so badly needed here to show movies that never make it to JC. "

spider1981 wrote on Aug 5, 2009 4:56 PM:

" Wow. So, in recent years, the mall lost Dollar Tree, Tuesday Morning, Things Remembered, Garfields, Taco Bell/Daily Grind, KB Toys, Lady Footlocker, Waldenbooks, Pac Sun, FYE, Hurst Fine Diamonds, and now Capital 4 Theater. This in addition to the many already vacant stores. How long is this painful decline going to drag out? "

" Mid-Mo, try going when the kids usually wouldn't want to be there. I know it's hard to do at times, as they typically are there at the best times for adults to be there as well... but if you go for a Saturday matinee or a weeknight other than Friday, you should be fine.

For movies that I really look forward to, I try to take a day off and go in the middle of a weekday. You almost always have the theater all to yourself, no cell phones or yelling or anything else. Makes the experience 100x better. "

Mid-Mo wrote on Aug 5, 2009 4:30 PM:

" My wife and I have tried to go to the movies three different times over the summer and each time we turned around before we got to the box office because of the obnoxious tweens. Are there any parents in this town? Can the theater use some of those extra workers from Cap. 4 for crowd control? "
