Missouri man convicted in 1984 murder

Published: Tuesday, August 4, 2009 8:28 AM CDT
LIBERTY, Mo. (AP) -- A Clay County jury has convicted a man of murder in the death of a woman 25 years ago in northwest Missouri.

The Lafayette County prosecutor's office said in a news release Monday that 54-year-old Steven E. Burns of Lafayette County was convicted Friday in the death of Pamela Ray. Her body was discovered five miles east of Lexington on Nov. 23, 1984.

Burns was arrested in 1984, but he was released after two weeks because of a lack of evidence.

The case was reopened in 2005 and tried in Clay County on a change of venue. Prosecutors presented DNA evidence unavailable in 1984 that included the victim's blood-soaked jeans.

Prosecutors waived the death penalty, leaving life in prison without parole the only possible sentence. Formal sentencing is Sept. 9.
