Stephens College announces 2009-2010 performing arts season schedule

COLUMBIA, Mo.-- Stephens College announces the 2009-2010 performing arts season schedule, featuring theatre, dance, music and film productions.

Season sponsors are KFRU News Talk 1400 AM and Columbia Home & Lifestyle.

Playhouse Company

Unless otherwise noted, all Playhouse performances are held in the Macklanburg Playhouse, 100 Willis Ave.

The Laramie Project

7:30 p.m., Sept. 25-26, Oct. 2-3, 2009; 2 p.m. Sunday matinee, Sept. 27

A moving and stunning story surrounding the tragedy of Matthew Shepard, who in 1998 was assaulted and left to die tied to a fence in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming. This mosaic chronicles more than 200 interviews with people of the town. It's an amazing piece of theatre that cries out to be produced in a college community.

Ah Wilderness!

By Eugene O'Neill

7:30 p.m., Oct. 30-31, Nov. 6-7, 2009; 2 p.m. Sunday matinee, Nov. 1

A tender portrait by the Father of American Drama. It is the Fourth of July in an idyllic Connecticut town. O'Neill guides us warmly through teenage growing pains, young love and traditional family values. This sweet piece has often been called "a breath of fresh air."

The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas

Book by Larry L. King and Peter Masterson; Music and lyrics by Carol Hall

7:30 p.m., Dec. 4-5, 9-12, 2009; 2 p.m. Sunday matinee, Dec. 6

This is a happy-go-lucky romp centering on the infamous Chicken Ranch. The country western score is delightful and don't let the title fool you, it is cheerfully inoffensive and will be a frolicking good time. Leave the babies at home, but bring the pre-teens, teens, grandmas and simply anyone who finds joy in a foot-stomping line dance.

Much Ado About Nothing

By William Shakespeare

7:30 p.m., Feb. 19-20, 26-27, 2010; 2 p.m. Sunday matinee, Feb. 21

One of Shakespeare's best romantic comedies! The story swirls around a pair of lovers named Claudio and Hero who are due to be married in a week. To pass the time before their wedding they become enmeshed in playing a trick on their friends Beatrice and Benedick. It will eventually, of course, work out, but the riot of misunderstanding and misplaced passions makes for a wonderful evening of theatre.

Playing for Time

7:30 p.m., March 19-20, 25-26, 2010; 2 p.m. Sunday matinee, March 21

(Performed at the Warehouse Theatre)

This drama--ultimately a celebration of life--is based on the autobiography of Fania Fenelon, a popular Parisian singer and member of the Resistance, who was arrested and sent to Auschwitz. Vanessa Redgrave played the role in a movie version.

H.M.S. Pinafore

Characters such as Dead Eye Dick, Buttercup and the Modern Major General bring this glorious music to life! The Stephens College Theatre and Music programs will combine to produce this lovely and uplifting operetta.

Ladies at the Alamo

Remember the big hair, big money and big attitude of the 1970s? The Ladies at the Alamo Theatre have it all and more! See all the shenanigans come to life when Dede Cooper returns from a brief vacation to find her world topsy-turvy. This season opener provides an inside look at the world of cut-throat community theatre.

The Dixie Swim Club

Every August, five unforgettable women meet for a weekend retreat on the beach in North Carolina with "no men, no kids, no work." This hilarious and touching comedy reveals the journey of these five lifelong friends and their struggles with work, love and middle age. This new play speaks to the heart of growing old with good friends.

Playhouse Creatures

The year is 1669, and women have finally been granted the freedom to act on stage by England's Charles II. De Angelis captures the hardships and triumphs of life for the first famous actresses of the British stage becoming attuned to their voice in society. Critics agree these five women are "flesh and blood heroines sure to move and inspire."

This provocative new drama follows one man on his quest to clean the slate with past relationships and find the perfect woman . . . whom he may have already lost. This romantic piece casts a truthful yet humorous light on the complexity of relationships.

Always an eagerly anticipated Stephens tradition, the Spring Dance Concert features a variety of dance forms such as classic ballet, modern dance, jazz and tap. A variety of world dance selections also highlights this evening of dance.

A Dickens Victorian Christmas

Historic Senior Hall Parlors, 100 Waugh St.

An authentic recreation of a Victorian Christmas Celebration hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dickens featuring holiday music, period dance, refreshments, games and frivolity.

Annual Spring Choral Concert

7:30 p.m., April 26, 2010

Historic Senior Hall, 100 Waugh St.

Performances by the Stephens College Choir and The Velvetones, the College's a cappella jazz ensemble that performed at Carnegie Hall in April 2005. For all ages.
