CAMDENTON - There are plenty of great golfing options at the Lake of the Ozarks.

None are better than Old Kinderhook.

“First of all, it's unique,” said Kinderhook Head Golf Professional Chris Buescher. “When you drive into the front gate and the valley opens up in front of you, I don't think there's another golf course in the state that has the same feeling you get from this facility.”

The course is plush from the first tee to the 18th green, offering a series of challenging holes and fabulous vistas.

“The bottom line is that this facility is always in incredible shape,” Buescher said. “Our superintendent, Tom Addington, has been here since 1997 since they started building the course.

“He's got a lot of emotional ties to the course and it's his baby, so to speak, and he does an exceptional job.”

Kinderhook, designed by Tom Weiskopf, has four sets of tees, ranging from 4,962 yards to 6,855 yards.

“You can make it play as easy as you want or you can make it as difficult as you want,” Buescher said. “Weiskopf courses are very fair and that's what I like about them. They tend to have very wide fairways, which these do, and that makes them very user-friendly.

“It's hard to find a golf course where you don't find a hole that's somewhat tricked-up or a goofy hole. This golf course doesn't have a hole like that. And it's got a great range of easy par 4s, tough par 4s, easy par 5s, tough par 5s ... you'll use every club in your bag when you play this course, that's what's so neat about it.”

Kinderhook, which averages 27,000 rounds of play per year, is ranked the fourth-best public course in Missouri by Golf Week. The top three are Branson Creek, Shoal Creek (Kansas City) and The Missouri Bluffs (St. Charles).

In-season greens fees are $75, Monday through Thursday, and $95, Friday through Sunday. A twilight rate of $45 is also available. Sunday through Wednesday, the club is offering a special Stay and Play package for $99 per person, per night (two-night minimum). And the lodging options are as plush as the golf course.

“That's a heck of a deal,” Buescher said.

This is Buescher's second year as head pro at Kinderhook after serving as an assistant for five years. Buescher, a 2003 graduate of Lincoln University, knows he's working in a slice of paradise.

“Everytime I drive through these gates, I get goosebumps,” Buescher said. “It's just a great office to have.”
