Growing gardeners

The Jefferson City Jaycees Cole County Fair officially kicks off Monday, but there was plenty of activity this weekend on the fairgrounds.

Local youth involved in 4-H and FFA came out to the exhibit building Saturday to show what they had made and raised over the summer. Entries included flowers, field crops, crafts, baked items and hams.

Caleb Schroeder, an 11-year-old from St. Thomas, has been in 4-H for four years. Among the items he brought in were peppers and cucumbers that he had raised.

"My family farms, but you don't have to be a farmer to do this," he said.

Not only did Caleb have to show he was involved in the raising of his vegetables, he also had to explain what he had learned while raising them.

Caleb and the other competitors were interviewed by judges, and the judges seemed to like what Caleb had done. He'll be advancing on to the state fair in Sedalia.

It seemed the judges got just as much enjoyment from the days' activities as the competitors.

"These activities show the kids things they can use the rest of their lives," said Becky Verslues, a judge for the past three years and a 4-H parent. "These are great programs for kids who aren't into sports or other school activities. They get to meet other kids and learn from each other."

Youth competitions will be going on throughout the week at the fair.

Music acts at the fair will include 2 Buck Drunk, Candy Coburn, Gloriana, Honky-Tonk Tailgate, Six By Silver, Red Line Chemistry, Vandelyn Kross and Skid Row.

Admission is $5 on Monday and Tuesday and $10 the rest of the week. The Battle of the Bands will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

High Impact Mobile DJ will provide the Beer Garden music Monday and Saturday, after the feature act finishes performing on the Budweiser Stage.
