Mo. State Fair adds science, rural life exhibits

Published: Sunday, July 26, 2009 12:26 PM CDT
SEDALIA, Mo. (AP) - The Missouri State Fair will have two new attractions when it opens Aug. 13: an exhibit on rural lifestyles and three days of science-focused demonstrations and activities.

"I think we offer things that appeal to everyone," fair director Mark Wolfe said.

The Rural Lifestyles Showcase will include some regular fair exhibits, such as art and floriculture, along with new ones, such as classes on sensible living and cooking with local foods.

"You're going to be able to learn everything from hobbies to wine 101," Wolfe said.

The goal is to teach visitors of all backgrounds about agriculture. Fair organizers don't expect them to become farmers, but the classes and demonstrations might help them manage a couple acres of land or can food, he said.

"It's an opportunity for us to reach folks in the city and say, 'Hey, we've got something here for you too,"' Wolfe said.

The three-day science focus starts Aug. 20 with a Show-Me Robots event, which will give visitors a chance to operate robots.

On Aug. 21, exhibits about "going green" and energy will be on display.

"That's something the whole country is into," Wolfe said of "green" initiatives.

Also several free entertainment acts that were a hit last year, including the Amazing Anastasini Circus, are scheduled to return. And the grandstand will feature acts such as Brooks & Dunn, Shinedown and Gary Allan.

Several discounts are available, including $1 admission on opening day.

"I am very pleased with our ticket sales," Wolfe said. "We're already ahead of where we've been the past several years."
