Ozark Woodstock: Missouri rock fest vets reminisce

Published: Friday, July 17, 2009 8:46 AM CDT
SEDALIA, Mo. (AP) -- A 1974 music festival that rocked the Missouri State Fairgrounds is the subject of a new exhibit at the Katy Depot in Sedalia.

Promoters told wary city leaders that the Ozark Music Festival was a soft-rock event expected to draw no more than 50,000 fans. But a crowd more than three times that size showed up to hear Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, the Eagles, REO Speedwagon, Lynyrd Skynyrd and other popular bands.

The huge crowds overwhelmed Sedalia. Traffic jams shut down local roads and businesses. One concertgoer died and police reported an estimated 1,000 drug overdoses and $100,000 worth of property damage.

The Sedalia Democrat described "a mountain of human waste and dirty syringes" in the aftermath.
