Churchill vandal released on reduced bond

By Don Norfleet
The Fulton Sun

WWU officials wrote letters on suspect’s behalf

Published: Thursday, July 16, 2009 2:06 PM CDT
The William Woods University student arrested for felony vandalism of over $5,000 at the Winston Churchill Memorial has been released from Callaway County Jail after several William Woods professors and administrators intervened in his behalf.

They wrote letters in behalf of Victor Louis Caldeon, 24, son of Lino and Rosie Gamez, Houston, Texas, after he was arrested for spray painting graffiti on the Winston Churchill Memorial on May 31 on the campus of Westminster College.

Calderon, who gave his address at the time of his arrest at 625 Vine Street in Fulton, was released from jail July 7 after his bond was reduced three times.

Court records show it was not the first time Calderon had been arrested. He was arrested on a drug charge on Jan. 25, 2002, in Houston, Texas, and pleaded guilty to a felony third-degree charge of possession of a controlled substance. He received a sentence of three years of probation and a $500 fine.

He also had been arrested for criminal mischief on May 14, 1999.

On Sept. 29, 2004, Calderon pleaded guilty to driving while his license was suspended and received a sentence of five days of confinement and a $100 fine.

It wasn’t Calderon’s first trip before Circuit Judge Carol England. On Jan. 31, 2009 he was fined $80 for speeding more than 20 miles per hour over the speed limit in Fulton.

The bond first was set at $35,000 on June 10 by Judge England, reduced to $20,000 on June 16 and finally reduced to $10,000 on July 6 by Judge England.

Several professors at Wiliam Woods University wrote letters on his behalf including: Cynthia Kramer, professor of legal studies; Larry York, director of intercollegiate athletics; and Peggy Nickerson, assistant professor; and Terry Martin, academic advisor and professor.

According to William Woods records, Calderon was majoring in graphic design/political and legal studies.

Calderon was able to post $1,000 or 10 percent of the $10,000 bond in order to be released from jail.

He is represented by public defender Leah Williamson, who told the court that Calderon was indigent and could not afford a lawyer. She said he was entitled to free legal representation paid for by the state.

Calderon’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on July 24.

I hope they take into consideration his past contact with Law Enforcement, lack of respect for rules and laws and hit him pretty hard. A hefty sentence and long probation might keep him on the straight and narrow. If not he would end up violating his probation and end up doing real time and not be a menace to society for a while, it would be his choice. "

Ask anyone that works in DOC, there IS a difference between inmates and convicts and this joker needs to find that out. Perhaps living in a small cell with a big, greasy man named Moe may deter his behavior and thinking. Maybe he'll change his name to Vickie when he gets out and design clothes! It's not a crime to be different, it is a crime to spread your difference all over other people's property, or even worse, an actual historical monument. All that says is disrespect for what the monument stands for. It doesn't matter how good someone is with a pencil or spray can, it will never mean the same thing as the original graffiti on that wall. "
