Blunt outraises Carnahan in Mo. Senate race

Republican Roy Blunt posted a strong fundraising quarter to pull ahead of Democrat Robin Carnahan in cash available for Missouri's 2010 Senate race.

Financial summaries released Wednesday show Blunt raised more than $1.4 million from April through June as he consolidated support within an initially factional Republican Party.

Carnahan, the only Democrat in the race, reported receiving about $1 million during the second quarter of 2009, roughly matching her receipts from the first quarter.

After accounting for expenses and money previously raised, Blunt's campaign had almost $1.8 million on hand compared to Carnahan's nearly $1.4 million at the start of July. Carnahan had held the cash advantage on their April quarterly reports, which covered the first few weeks of the Senate campaign.

A historical swing state, Missouri's Senate race is expected to be one of the most closely contested nationally as Republicans try to take away the Democrats' 60-seat, filibuster-proof majority.

Blunt, who represents southwest Missouri's 7th Congressional District, and Secretary of State Carnahan are the only declared candidates to replace retiring Republican Sen. Kit Bond.

Carnahan is the daughter of the late Gov. Mel Carnahan and former Sen. Jean Carnahan and the sister of U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan. Blunt previously served as secretary of state and is the father of former Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt.

"They're both two pretty high-profile, well-connected candidates who shouldn't have too much trouble raising enough money to run a credible campaign," said David Kimball, a political scientist at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

When Bond announced in January that he would not seek re-election, Republicans initially appeared headed to a primary. But Blunt has since gained the endorsements of nearly all Republican state officials, as well as the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Although former Treasurer Sarah Steelman and state Sen. Chuck Purgason both have said they are considering a Republican U.S. Senate bid, neither has been raising money. Former State Department official Tom Schweich, who publicly weighed entering the Senate race, instead endorsed Blunt last month and shifted to the auditor's race.

Blunt said in a written statement Wednesday that his fundraising total "far exceeded" his $1 million goal for the quarter.

"The positive response to our campaign has been truly outstanding, but this fight is too important to rest now and we have to keep working hard," Blunt said.

Although she trailed Blunt, Carnahan also had a strong fundraising period, said campaign spokesman Tony Wyche.

"For two consecutive quarters she has raised over $1 million, which shows support for her candidacy is broad and deep and the momentum is sustained," he said.

Carnahan's fundraising totals include $60,810 as her share of proceeds from two joint fundraisers with other Democratic Senate candidates. Wyche said one event teamed her with Rep. Paul Hodes of New Hampshire; the other with Sens. Dick Durbin of Illinois, Chris Dodd of Connecticut, and Michael Bennet of Colorado.

Blunt's report included $164,794 in outstanding obligations, which campaign spokesman Rich Chrismer said were for bills that arrived but were not paid before June 30.

Unfortunately for Blunt, more money doesn't necessarily lead to victory. "
