Sedalia accepts DNR order to fix sewers

SEDALIA, Mo. (AP) -- Sedalia has seven years to fix a sewer overflow problem that can result in backups into homes and the release of untreated water into creeks.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources wants the city to tighten the system so that no storm water gets into the sewer lines.

City workers recorded 35 sanitary sewer overflow events from January to May this year.

Those events happened during dry and wet weather and included overflows into basins at the three wastewater treatment plants and backups into homes. Some 14 backups in homes were reported during wet weather.
