Shots end drug deal

Charges have been filed against one Jefferson City man and charges are pending against another after the pair tried to injure two MUSTANG Drug Task Force members Tuesday morning.

According to reports from the Cole County Sheriff's Department, the incident began at approximately 10:40 a.m. when task force members purchased approximately one gram of crack cocaine for $150 from suspects, who were riding in a vehicle in the 400 block of Kensington Park.

The suspects were identified as Brien Robinson, 37, and Jamil Thompson, 28.

The buy was recorded on a digital audio recorder and witnessed by other drug task force officers.

After the purchase, task force officers began to approach the vehicle to make the arrests. Officers reportedly had their badges in plain sight when Thompson drove the vehicle rapidly toward the officers, who were on foot, "placing them in fear for their lives," one sheriff's report said.

At that time, the officers fired their weapons at the vehicle, stopping it and wounding both Thompson and Robinson.

Both men were treated for their injuries.

Robinson has been charged with sale of a controlled substance and Thompson is facing a charges of distribution of cocaine and first-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

An infant was in the car at the time of the transaction and the mother, Melaine Copeland, 21, Jefferson City, was taken into custody and is facing charges in this case. The child was not hurt.

" So apparently a child, with no choice's life isnt worth as much as anybody elses? I seriously doubt that the LE would have desired to harm a child, whether they knew there was one in the car or not. These individuals are trained to do their job and do it well, however that training might be given and with whatever terminology is chosen. I am glad to know there are two less drug dealers on the streets, and that no LE or CHILD was hurt in the process. "

" So lawabidding you would rather see the cops injured or killed so a baby of a druggie doesn't get injured ? doesn't make sense. I personally know some of these people and they also have families. The dealers knew just what they were doing with the kid in the car, probably figured that if they got busted the cops wouldn't shoot with the baby in the car. i'm glad the baby didn't get injured but the two arrested should be charged with endangerment with a deadly weapon. Get off the Under covers they did their job correctly "

I just dont think that child should of been put in joepardy just BECAUSE TWO DUMMMIES WANNA SALE COPS CRACK,SHOULD OF WAITED UNTIL THEY GOT OFF(LOL) to do buy/ bust COOL, but what about the GRAND JURY, or WARRANT SHOULD OF LTG FOR THE KIDS SAKE. THERE ARE GOOD PEOPLE IN THOSE AREAS SO BACKOFF chakkers "

Been there done that...I'm alive and so is he because I didn't let the adreniline over load my thinking. He had a weapon I gave commands he followed. Suspect arrested. I can give commands and shoot at the same time if those commands are not followed.

The whole reason I made any commet in this thread was because someone made the comment "The cops need to go back to training and learn to shoot better". The officers involved acted just the way they were trained. They used what force was required to stop the threat. "

" Yes, the word kill is not used, and the SOP's will say minimal force necessary, of course they will, we live in the lawyer age! Simon, putting restrictions on officers, limmiting shots, a split second that may cost the officer or the publics safety to be jeppredized is the kind of thinking we don't need, it get people killed....the wrong people.

It's always easy to sit back after an incident and calmly dissect it. Try holding a gun with adreniline pumping through you, after a chase, with the subject threatening you with a weapon....if a lawyer enters your head at that moment, it's over. Shoot to kill, empty it, live. "

Simon wrote on Jun 17, 2009 12:34 AM:

" These training sessions only give the officer one way of stopping the treat. Which is head shots which would kill 99% of all people. But they are still teaching to stop the threat.

This is my opinion!!!! 99% of all Department SOP's will dictate the officer use the least force nessisary to take control of a situation. If by showing up at a scene calms everything down then the officer needs do nothing else. Same time the officer may go one step higher than the threat to him or citizens. Man with a knife, officer uses gun. An Officer must always win the battle. Officers SHOULD only use what force is nessisary to stop the-threat. "

" There's an old joke.

Attorney: Officer why did you shoot the suspect 5 times.

Officer: Well mama 4 shots wasn't enought and 6 shots would have been to many.

Officers are taught how to shoot moving targets. Officers are taught how to "double tap". Two to the body one to the head. Officers shoot at targets that look like some one hiding behind a wall. Only the head and half the chest visible. Officers train on machines where there is a hostage and a hostage taker. Giving the Officer only a head shot. "

I should have known someone would nit pick my choice of words..to describe better see what blue night said above...And yes they are taught to "destroy" target if under threat...and it does not take a genious to know that if a suspect is giving up an officer can not continue firing..and YES THAT WOULD BE MURDER!! My husband is in the MO sheriffs training academy...so "thats the kind of academy he is in" and they are wonderful instructors and students.... "

blueknight wrote on Jun 16, 2009 9:50 AM:

" To elaborate on using the term "destroy." Many firearm instructors use that term because it carries with it a weight to emphasize the importance of what they are about to do. Once you pull the trigger, you can't get the bullet back. There is no do-over. There is no second chance. "

blueknight wrote on Jun 16, 2009 9:45 AM:

" Law enforcement officers are trained to use their weapon to stop threats and to target center of mass. You only point your weapon at something you are willing to destroy.

And yes, "destroy" is the official term used by firearm instructors. "

plain_citizen wrote on Jun 16, 2009 7:14 AM:

" Keli,

I am not sure what training academy your husband is going to, but I can assure you that there is not one LE certified instructor anywhere that will tell you that they train to kill. They train to stop the threat...if that means someone dies for the threat to stop then yes that is what they are trained to do. If the first shot misses and the person who is the threat puts their hands in the air and lays down on the ground and gives up and that officer shoots them again and kills them...that is called murder. I think by reading this article the officers did a good job and did what they were trained to do. "

keli wrote on Jun 15, 2009 10:03 AM:

And rekib.....Well said..I agree.. "

Outcome, two criminals caught and sent to jail with no innocent bystanders hurt. Awesome job by the police if you ask me, ( and even if you don't ). If you have any problems with what happens to them after their arrest, its not the problem for the police, its our problem. Lets get the laws changed. Call, email, write your congressman, Senator, state rep, the mayor, anyone in office. If they don't see a change is needed and push for it, vote them out of office and vote for someone that will. "

Simon wrote on Jun 13, 2009 12:44 PM:

" G.Willikers you are correct LEO's are taught to shoot center mass. If someone is attacking them, they shoot till the suspect stops. If two to the chest stops the suspect, then that should be all that is fired.

Ceter mass is the best bet for a hit. In a fire fight a person's adrenaline goes thru the roof. People get tunnel vision, the fine motor skills start to go. So the best chance of a hit is aiming center mass. That way if the person is off a bit you still hit the suspect.

Even some of the best shooters in the world would miss there first shots when being shot at. "

" Simon, if you pull your weapon and are shooting at someone, you are aiming for their chest... center mass. If you aim at a leg or arm, you are an idiot. Period. It wouldn't bother me one bit to put thugs in the ground. Call me heartless, but I'm sick of 'em. Isn't everyone else? We need to take our streets back by speaking up against these types and defending ourselves when we need to.

Wake up here people..... "

factsnodrama wrote on Jun 12, 2009 5:42 PM:

" Simon, your wrong, while they might not use the word kill, they are taught to shoot kill, they are not aiming for the leg, or arm, but vital organs, and if not available then the head, whatever stops the person/threat, you empty your clip, reload empty it again. Go out to you tube, it's complete saturation when they shoot, usually multiple officers emptying clips. "

"Secondly officers are not taught shoot to kill. Officers are taught shoot to stop the threat. "

Do you know this for fact or is this just your opinion? I know a couple of people that are in LE and they were taught to shoot at center of mass....essentially that is the chest. My understanding is when an officer has to pull and fire his weapon his intent is not to wound or kill. His purpose is to neutralize the threat. They do this by taking the highest % shot which is shooting at the biggest area....center of mass (ie. chest). "

lovemyboys wrote on Jun 12, 2009 1:16 PM:

" Maybaby--I'm sure most people agree with you as do I, but LE is limited on what they can do because over the years criminals have gained more rights than the victim/victim's family. LE officers have to avoid fatal wounds to a criminal as much as possible which stinks but that's the fact. When they do shoot someone and kill them, they get put on Administrative Leave, etc and then the criminal's family starts calling the ACLU and their lawyers to get the LE officer/city/county whatever, sued.

Talk to any cop...they'd love to do a serious smackdown on criminals but thanks to our illustrious justice system and ambulance chasing lawyers, it's gotten to where criminals have it made... "

" Simon - isn't trining for these situations required? LE should be able to run a mile, do more than 15-20 pushups, jump fences, and then use their weapon accurately. That is what tax paid training is for! Hello! "

maybaby wrote on Jun 12, 2009 1:02 PM:

" If you aren't going to shoot to kill why bother? Self defense is self defense. Killing these particular perps in the line of dutywould save taxpayers A LOT of money. Dead men tell no tales. Nor do they continue their wicked behaviors. "

Simon wrote on Jun 12, 2009 12:25 PM:

" Joytothworld, go run a mile, do 15 to 20 pushups, then jump over acouple of fences, then pull you weapon and see how well you can shoot. Did the officer involved have to do any of that, no. But that will get your heart pumping and your adrenaline going. Secondly officers are not taught shoot to kill. Officers are taught shoot to stop the threat. The threat was getting hit by a moving car. The car stopped the shooting stops.

It's easy for you to say someone else should have shot and killed someone. You don't have to live with the fact the rest of your life. I wouldn't wish that pain on anyone. "

maybaby wrote on Jun 12, 2009 9:40 AM:

" Maybe people should be lynched. LE is a joke when it comes to drugs. I used to have a neighbor about a mile away that we suspected of dealing meth. I called the sherriff's office frequently along with the MSHP, nothing was ever done about this guy. Then one day he tried to kill his wife, and the truth came out. He got off with unsupervised probabtion and went right back to his old habits. Needless to say, we moved away. I just think LE could do better if they wanted to. After all, one gram and $150 isn't much in the grand scheme of the drug world, why can't they get the big dealers? "

I'm not advocating people go out and lynch those they think are criminals, but to have communities bond together. Like a super-charged neighborhood watch. I think too many people around here are afraid to speak out and stand up for themselves and their neighbor. "

joytotheworld wrote on Jun 11, 2009 5:17 PM:
