SPRINGFIELD — Tony Stephenson had one goal in mind heading into the Class 1 state singles tournament.

“I just wanted to finish higher than fourth,” the Helias senior said.

Why fourth? That was Helias’ previous highest finish at state, held by Tim Dunville, the current Crusader coach.

Stephenson did Dunville two better, finishing second Saturday at the Cooper Tennis Complex. He was joined by the Crusader doubles team of Chris Grigsby and Nick Kroeger, who finished sixth as Helias was one of just two schools to have three state medalists.

“It was a very successful tournament,” Dunville said.

In Saturday morning’s semifinals, Stephenson defeated Tommy Aiber of Pembroke Hill Academy in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 7-5 match tiebreaker). Aiber, an Indiana University recruit, had previously finished second and third at state.

In the finals, Stephenson squared off with two-time defending state champion Andrew Mellow of MICDS, Mellow, who had dropped just five games in his first three matches, defeated Stephenson 6-2, 6-1.

“I was coming off a long three-setter and (Mellow) was fresh,” Stephenson said. “I was just a little worn out.”

Stephenson plans on attending Westminster University.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said of his two-day run at the tournament.

The team of Grigsby and Kroeger went 1-1 Saturday. They defeated the Farmington team of Drew Fuemmeler and Pierre Pujol 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 to advance to the fifth-place match.

They then fell 4-6, 0-6 to Forrest Richmond and Alex Goel of John Burroughs to wrap up their tournament.
