Jefferson City High School's Class of 2009 should be like Missouri artist Thomas Hart Benton, first lady Georganne Wheeler Nixon said Friday night.

"Like those pioneers" in his paintings, she said, "each of us has a role to accept the challenges of today and to improve our communities for tomorrow."

Nixon said Benton took two years to complete his "Social History of Missouri" mural on the Capitol's House Lounge walls.

In keeping with the high school's tradition of having previous graduates address this year's class, Nixon is a Jefferson City High School graduate who later earned a bachelor's degree in education and a law degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Her comments were echoed by this year's two distinguished alumni.
