DJ Drama combines hip-hop’s best on new album

DJ Drama “Gangsta Grillz: The Album (Vol. 2)” (Grand Hustle/Atlantic Records)

DJ Drama helped boost the careers of numerous rappers such as Lil’ Wayne and Young Jeezy by promoting their variety of freestyle rhymes and remixes through his popular “Gangsta Grillz” mixtape series.

The series even boosted Drama’s appeal too, landing him a record deal ” which is rare for a DJ. Now, after overcoming racketeering charges in 2007, he returns with “Gangsta Grillz: The Album (Vol. 2)” with some of hip-hop’s best.

Each song offers between four to seven rappers on a song, which would seem too excessive. But for the most part, Drama knows how to create an intriguing combination of rappers, matched with solid production to make it a worthy listen ” like the album’s first single “Day Dreaming,” featuring T.I., Snoop Dogg and Akon.

The highlight of the album is the Khalid-produced “Yacht Music.” Over a smooth base line, Nas, Scarface and Willie The Kid rap about living the good life with Marsha Ambrosius crooning on the chorus.

Drama also reunites New Orleans rappers B.G., Juvenile and Soulja Slim on another banger “Gotta Get It,” which was produced by Drumma Boy. In all, there are some downfalls with “I’m Fresh” (Mike Jones, Rick Ross and Trick Daddy) and “Sweat” (Ray J, Fabolous and LA The Darkman), but the quality songs outweighs the missteps.

CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: “We Must Be Heard,” features Ludacris, Willie The Kid and Busta Rhymes where each raps about the current economic harsh times.
