Secretary of State: 230,000 Mo. voters may lack ID

Published: Tuesday, April 28, 2009 4:09 PM CDT
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Secretary of State Robin Carnahan estimates Missouri has nearly 230,000 registered voters who lack a government-issued photo identification.

Missouri does not currently require a photo ID to vote, though some Republican lawmakers have proposed a constitutional amendment to mandate that.

Carnahan, a Democrat, opposes a photo ID requirement because she fears it could prevent or discourage some people from voting.

Carnahan came up with her estimate of voters lacking government-issued photo identifications by comparing a database for registered voters with a database of people with Missouri driver's licenses or identification cards. She said there could be an error rate of about 4 percent because of name changes, misspelled names or nicknames used by the different databases.

" Why don't they just give you a card like your drivers license when you register to vote. Now, you get your drivers license in minutes. Have a machine there to take your pic and give you a laminated card, It beats the card stock they give you now. "

" I am so tired of the push to get people to vote. If they don't care enough about the right and privelige they have to vote. Then they don't need to vote. So what if there is the huge inconvience of having a photo ID. IF it is a requirement it is a little thing compared to what are veterans have done for our Right to vote. "

" I think that convicted felons should pay for the rest of there lives for there crimes . They should be able to live , work, have a life. But they should lose several constitutional rights for the rest of there lives because they have shown a lack of responsiblity to use there brains just like those who have mental defects. They shouldn't get to vote , own a gun, or travel freely without being searched and questioned. I think they have payed a price by doing there time, but there should always be some kind of reminder what there stupidity did for them. "

" Why shouldn't felons be able to vote? They paid their "debt" to society, did their time and are supposedly "rehabilitated." Just because someone made a dumb mistake at 18 or 19, did some time in prison and then moved on with their lives in a productive and responsible manner, I think it's horrible we continue to punish them after they have served their sentence. "

justaword wrote on May 5, 2009 9:06 PM:

" Those without ID are not only felons or the underbelly of society. I know of several women who do not drive and never ever had an state issued id. Everyone in this country should be able to vote except felons of any kind, people who are not natural citizens of our country, and those of mental defect. Also if renters are not able to vote how do you explain this to those who live in senior housing and nursing homes. Would you count these people out of elections. "

" Republicans could easily get back in the game if they would drop the abortion and gay parts of their platform.

I used to be a strong Republican back in the days when they stood for personal responsibility and a small, limited government that is most concerned with national defense and protecting the free enterprise system.

I sure miss Ronald Reagan... "

" the idea you must be a property owner to vote is ludicrous. It didn't really work the first time and only served to be a racist statement then. Example, women could not vote, blacks could not vote. Is that really the way you want re-create our country. I rent an apartment and am returning to school in the fall to work on my masters. I do not own a house and frankly, am not looking at buying one anytime soon. I believe that people who think like this are just angry republicans who lost and are looking for a way to get back in the game. This will hopefully be a new beginning for this country without torture, or illegal wiretaps. "

" These suggestions are ridiculous. People died for my right to vote. It's ludacris to suggest that right should be taken away because I don't own a home. Under this theory, college students should not be allowed to vote? You may say you only want those contributing towards society to have a vote but what you reallly mean is that you don't want the youth to have a voice. Homeownership is not all it's cracked up to be. I don't think I'll ever want to own a home but that has nothing to do with my contributions to society. "

" But to take it one step more, I think the IRS and our entire tax system needs to be completely erased and we start over...with something more simple and fair..either a flat tax or national sales tax. There used to be a concept of not being taxed without being represented. This nation has become nothing but taxes. I earn my wage and pay sales tax...when I buy gas I am taxed...when I buy groceries I am taxed...when I invest my money and earn interest I am taxed...when I give it away to my family they are taxed. This nation is nothing but tax upon tax anymore. "

ODF wrote on May 5, 2009 2:03 PM:

" I see no reason to exclude renters...I know a lot of hard-working, tax-paying renters. Why should they be excluded simply because their situation (or choice) is they rent rather than buy? But even worse, this whole idea smacks of the old concept of the class system....and isn't part of what America is all about is making everyone equal? "

boscoe wrote on May 5, 2009 1:40 PM:

" Agree with you on the renters, Editor.

Property taxes are Draconian.
Income taxes are silly, especially for government employees.
Sales taxes make the most sense. "

online_editor wrote on May 4, 2009 5:42 PM:

" I think your underlying theme is that people need to contribute, not merely draw from the system. We were renters before becoming home owners (or perhaps I should say home loan owners), and I always felt our rent money helped the apartment owner pay property taxes. I mean, I would hope they were charging me enough to cover their expenses, taxes and make a profit. Plus we paid sales and income taxes. So, from that perspective of being what I hoped was a productive citizen, I never really understood the whole renters haven't earned a vote argument. Even fiscal conservative Dave Ramsey urges people to rent until they build their wealth and can afford a home.

Hit me with more thoughts please. "

boscoe wrote on May 4, 2009 10:46 AM:

" Rick, people who should be eliminated from voting include:

illegal invaders
dead people
multiple voters
proxy voters

It is fine for everyone living and legal to have one vote, but that is all they get- one vote. Also, they should have to vote on their own, not have others vote for them. "

JCpatriot wrote on May 4, 2009 9:08 AM:

" Rick,

Byron's right home owners( not renters) with yearly property tax should be the only ones to vote? It won't happen, because it would make sense to seperate the vermin... lol "

JCpatriot wrote on May 4, 2009 9:03 AM:

" OnlineEd Rick,
Probably Higher or middle income class people ? I would think they would want lower income people to vote ? Otherwise how would the Democratic welfare Bandwagon keep rolling? Just my hyperthecial opinion ? lol "

JCpatriot wrote on May 4, 2009 8:59 AM:

" Bos & Byron,
Good points both of you, 9 times out 10 people with no State picture ID.'s or State Drivers lic. picture ID.'s are usually felons on the run. Most likely trailing with warrants behind them from god knows where?

Oh what the heck let them all vote for the democratic failed welfare & handout income system, might as well pea it all away. Its already in the process. BTW: Mrs. Carnahan & her Dad has been a democrats for a long, long time? Get the picture... "

" I'm curious for the sake of discussion. Who would be eliminated from voting? Almost everyone pays sales taxes. "

Travelin_Rose wrote on May 1, 2009 8:24 AM:

Travelin_Rose wrote on May 1, 2009 8:23 AM:

" I'm surprised the number is so low. "Vote early and often" is the old Chicago saying and I think that has spilled over into the neighboring state of Missouri. How many are illegal aliens? Or are they not counted in this number? "

Byron W. wrote on Apr 28, 2009 6:28 PM:
