Jays, Helias set for weekend twinbill

The cliche' is as old as the game itself.

“When you play Helias, you throw the records out the window,” Jefferson City Jays coach Mike Shipp said.

Somewhere, there's a whole bunch of records piled outside a window.

With bragging rights on the line, the Jays (6-9) and Crusaders (9-5) will clash in their annual weekend doubleheader Friday and Saturday.

Friday's JV game at the Legion Complex will be played first, starting at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity game at around 6:15 p.m. Between games, a brief ceremony will be held for Military Appreciation Night.

The Jays will then host the Crusaders at noon Saturday at Vivion Field.

“When we get together, something happens,” Helias coach Chris Wyrick said. “One team could be 20-0, the other could be 0-20 and it will be a one-run nailbiter. That's just the way it is.”

The Crusaders are coming off a 9-1 win over Marshall on Monday, while the Jays beat Rolla 8-7 on Tuesday. Jefferson City won that one with an improbable seven-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning.
