Never mind there's dirt and sand forever trapped underneath the cover of Aislinn Lowry's lime green laptop. Inside are more than 4,000 photos and notes from a three-month, once-in-a-lifetime educational experience inside ancient Egyptian tombs and temples.

Lowry, known locally for her musical and theatrical talents, was selected among 12 college students to participate in an intense and elite study of ancient architecture and antiquities in Egypt this past winter through the New York University Excavations project at Amheida.

“I'm annoyingly adventurous,” Lowry said.

So studying abroad was on her to-do list when she chose Illinois Wesleyan University, in Bloomington, Ill.

“There's no experience better than to live in another country and get to know yourself by living there,” Lowry said.

This trip did more than boost the college junior's self-confidence, change her perception of the world, and increase her fascination with that ancient land.

“I definitely feel my future vocation lies in the world of antiquities,” Lowry said.

Although she enjoyed the hands-on opportunity to directly apply what she was learning, Lowry said she is looking more at curatorships or museum studies for her career.
