Mt. Olive, Russellville Baptist churches hosted Disciple Now

By John L. Inman III, California Democrat

Program was for area youth

Published: Thursday, March 26, 2009 3:31 PM CDT
Mt. Olive Baptist Church and Russellville Baptist Church combined efforts to host a Disciple Now weekend on March 20-22 for area youth.

The weekend served as a way for youth to grow deeper spiritually as well as find ways to serve the community. Denita Jenkins works with the youth at Russellville Baptist Church and was a host home for the weekend.

“The weekend was very successful,” she said. “While our numbers were down, their service projects were well received.”

The projects included cleaning car windows, yards and a horse barn area, picking up rocks at the baseball field and cooking dinner for someone who had gone through chemotherapy treatment. Jenkins said they were able to make an impact in their community through their service.

“Disciple Now has been an event for our youth to grow spiritually,” Jenkins said, “and has also given them the chance to stand strong in their own school.”

The theme of this year's Disciple Now was the Greek word Tupos, which means to make an impact or leave an impression. The theme verse for the weekend was 1 Timothy 4:12, “Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.”

Just as the group of more than 40 middle and high school students set an example through their projects, the two churches have been a steady example of cooperation during the 12 years the event has been held.

“There are many benefits to partnering with another church,” Jenkins said, “including manpower and resources. But most of all the benefit is being able to show the youth in our community that churches can work together to benefit the kingdom of God.”
