City could annex land containing 2 hotels for lodging tax

The Jefferson City Council is being asked to approve plans for the city to annex a non-residential area west of the current city limits where two hotels are located.

City officials said Hampton Inn and Comfort Inn are the only hotels in the metro Jefferson City area that don't contribute to the city's Convention and Visitors Bureau. The hotels within the city limits have asked the city to pursue annexation because they believe it's unfair for these hotels to get the benefits of the marketing area without having to charge the lodging tax.

Attempts to negotiate for voluntary annexation of the area have failed.

Also Monday night, an ordinance will be introduced to establish assistance for individuals who purchase older homes in the Old Town area. This area goes roughly from Dix Road to Stadium Boulevard to Moreau Drive and Clark Avenue back to the Missouri River.

" DaleJr.,
I totally agree. I might as well vote yes to annex apache flats area, this way I can vote out all these revenue bloodsucking counsil people & Mayor out of office...

This is how they develop JCY future, because they don't know to bring tourism, Commerce, & Jobs to this areas. Its obvisous they don't know squat in the first place; Instead they making us taxpayers pay for there mistakes...

I hope Jeffcitians see by now, they need to not re-elect ( fire) them all including the Mayor. Get the right people in there that are for us taxpayers interest & future. I know a couple of them, they got ran out up North pulling these Nazi tactics. "

" They will still have to vote to annex apache flats again, Its just another JC city counsil tactic to annex.
Just say No annex again, to these greedy revenue blood vacuum vampires... "

" it does not matter how much a room costs , inside or outside city limits, or if one hotel/motel , will match or beat the other offers, our so -called " city leaders " feel they are being deprived of the lodging tax, and want in on it, , so un-fortunately, they are trying to annex another community. they will probably try to annex fulton next, when they find out how many appliances were sold, during the no sales tax on appliances sale in april...( which jc opted out of ) consumers need a break, and we are getting tired of our elected officials, trying to screw us out of it !! "

" I stayed at the Comfort Suites 2 nights for the gov's inauguration. It was the only reservation I could get in October - at the time, I didn't know about all the elected officials families being in town, etc. I also didn't know about all you great people who could have given me some tips! At any rate, I thought the Comfort Suites was absolutely first rate and will stay there again, even if it costs more.

Love your city, by the way. Have a great weekend, everybody. "

" How about annexing the Quarry? How about annexing ABB? How about annexing Modine? How about annexing Chesebrough-Ponds buildings out by the fair grounds?

Might as well annex Westview Heights, Westport, and London Way, too.

No consistency in this town on anything. "

Maybe it will icrease other taxes and costs? Have you ever thought of that? "

" If they don't care about the lodging tax and don't use the fact that they are out of the city limits to sell hotel rooms, then what is the problem? Last time I stayed in St. Louis, I was charged the lodging tax and I paid it. The hotel doesn't pay it, the guest does. At least that is the way it works in St. Louis. "

" People move and build business' in the county for a reason. If they start creeping my way and annexing, I am running as fast as I can. I can't tell you how many retired people I know that have moved because the taxes in JC are so ridiculous. Doesn't the Mayor have an agenda that states that he believes in annexation instead of taxes???? Yea, thats a great plan. I am with mom, annex the quarry. I believe the subdivision behind it fought the city years ago on annexation. But if they took them in, they would have to take the quarry in so they got lucky. "

" It would be like someone in town complaining because someone outside the city limits gets to build a building on their property that someone in town can't so they whine and say it's not fair that person should be annexed into city limits to teach them a lesson for living out of town. "

waitingontheend wrote on Mar 19, 2009 8:26 AM:

" Why should they be happy to join the city, all I read is how crappy Jeff is and what crappy council people there are. Where is the incentive? They don't receive all the benefits either because I would think it would benefit to be closer to the Capitol and in town where all the events are then to be out in Apache Flats which is not very pretty to look at. This is just the city looking to pull in more money to cover their debt, but then if they annex are they going to fix old Hwy 50 because it is in some need out there. "

Travelin_Rose wrote on Mar 18, 2009 2:05 PM:

" Fact is they built these two hotels out of the city limits to avoid charging the lodging tax. If this weren't the fact, then they should be happy to join in Jefferson City, charge the tax to their guests and become part of the city. "

Look at the street damage those large trucks do to the city and don't contribute one cent. Look at the millions of dollars of tax revenue that could be collected. Reality check; the council and mayor answer to the few individuals that really run this town."

Very good post, Mom.

Elitism and Cronyism are the main principles that guide city government around here. "

" i can just imagine the new 90 day employee , at these 2 hotels in question, asking when he or she will get their raise , and being told, it all depends on annexation,, and our lodging tax,, this is pathetic, jeff city needs more jobs, which is what you peple need to focus on , i know a .50 cent raise doesn't mean much to the average council or chamber member , but it means , get -by ..or food stamps, for the average missouri hotel worker SOO SADD "

" jeff city city council, jeff city chamber of commerce members, please focus your attention on attracting business to jeff city, creating jobs, businesses etc.. rather than forcing existing businneses , that are already established ...to move further out of town.. they built their hotels where they are for a reason.. taxes.. you people have got to figure out that annexation is not always the answer !! especially during this time of "economic stimulus", try focusing your attention in a more positive direction,,, jobs, growth, community ,, etc !! "

" More goverment invervention. Just what we need. The people of that area were given a choice to annex or not. They chose not to and ended up with a strip club in their backyards. The hotel benefits from the 'marketing area' and doesn't pay taxes. No but they all experienced the effects of Shakel's Secret. Let these people decide what they want to do. If they want to risk another Strip Club (right next to a church, no less) then let the hotel stay out of city limits. There are risks and rewards in life. Plain and simple. It isn't the government's job to alter those in order to change the results. "

ksripp wrote on Mar 15, 2009 11:40 PM:

" yes, metro Jefferson City area. Jefferson City qualifies as a metropolitan statistical area. Clearly there is much of the Jefferson City population which resides outside of the city-limit borders. These hotels get all of the benefit of being a part of the Jefferson City metro area, and they get the services as well. They should pay the price. "

" I work for the owners of those two hotels. They actually own 4, Hilton Garden Inn in Columbia, Doubletree on Monroe and then Hampton and Comfort on S. Country Club. And trust me when I say, taxes are why they built these two out here. "

" Those motels purposely built outside the city limits to avoid the city hall bs and higher taxes.

Unfortunatley, the way the city has worded the laws, Forced Annexation is very difficult to fight.

More bullying by City Hall... "
