Suspects still at large

By The News Tribune staff
Published: Sunday, March 1, 2009 1:51 AM CST
Two men who eluded authorities for several hours Friday night were still being sought Saturday and Crimestoppers is now offering a $500 reward - per suspect - for information leading to their arrest.

The Cole County Sheriff's Department is seeking Dale Scott Olten Jr., 20, and Dale Scott Olten Sr., 45, in connection with a series of burglaries in the county.

Olten Jr. is six feet tall and weighs 150 pounds, while Olten Sr. is six feet, two inches tall and weighs 210 pounds.

The Sheriff's Department said it has warrants for their arrest on charges of second-degree burglary.

A third man, Jesse Patterson, 21, also is believed to be involved in the break-ins. He was taken into custody at about 5 p.m. Friday in the 15000 block of Route H. He was charged with second-degree burglary, and is being held on a $50,000 bond in the Cole County Jail.

The search for the other two suspects - who were identified by authorities after a homeowner in the Eugene area interrupted a break-in at about 1:30 p.m. Friday - continued until well after dark.

Cole County Sheriff Greg White said at least two men were discovered by the homeowner. The men fled from the house, White said, but left their vehicle there. Inside the vehicle were several personal items, including wallets and drivers licenses.

White said a subsequent search warrant - issued for a Russellville address - yielded a sizable cache of stolen goods and guns. Two other searches were also conducted in Russellville.

More than 45 stolen weapons were seized when the search warrant was served, the Sheriff's Department reported.

While looking for the stolen weapons, several other stolen items were recovered. Some of the items stolen were from Moniteau, Miller and Callaway counties and included weedeaters, TVs, jewelry boxes, DVD players, crossbows, compound bows, chainsaws, lock boxes, safes and jewelry.

According to the report, narcotics also were found during one of the searches.

Some of the goods seized were turned over to the respective counties at the scene. The rest were brought back to the Cole County Sheriff's Department for processing.

The investigation is not yet complete.

“We're not sure how many burglaries we've solved out of this,” said White.

White said the investigation has involved officers from Miller and Moniteau counties, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Missouri Highway Patrol.

But he warned the two men will eventually be found.

“They are going to run into law enforcement somewhere,” he said. “We're going to find them.”

Anyone with information about the suspects' whereabouts may call (573) 659-TIPS or go online at www.jeffcitycrimestoppers.com.

Are you kidding me? He made more than "A" mistake. He has MULTIPLE DWI's, had no regard for the law as he continued to drirve drunk and he finally ended up killing two people. "A mistake" is like calling the civil war a little dispute. Get a grip.....he KILLED 2 people. "

" I will be the first to admit that Jasmine made a bad choice when she got involved with Olten (Sr.) but I don't think making a bad choice means she should have to die and that her children and her family have to live a life of torture not knowing what happened to her. I have to believe in my heart that someone is going to read this and do the right thing and tell LE what they know. It's been almost 2 yrs now. Please do the right thing. "

" At the very least, one of these guys know something about the disappearance of my daughter Jasmine Haslag. I can't imagine why it has taken this long to get them behind bars. Their records on casenet are enough to make a normal person shake their head. Now I just need to know what it is going to take to find Jasmine and what happened to her.

Since she disappeared, several people have contacted me with tips about the case but acted as they were to scared to talk to LE because of the people involved. NOW is the time to talk while you know these guys are locked up. Please don't forget about Jasmine. "

" The good folks in Russellville need to run all the bad boys and girls out of their Town. There are so many loser's in Russellville and they make the law abiding people loser's too by stealing and pilfering and causing problems. Will these guys have to murder someone to be put in prison (like Larry Welch did). "

" The cops in my county say the same thing, "The Bigger Fish", but they also said that if you feel threatened shoot them but make sure they are half way in your door so you can be justified. So we won't bother to bother the police, we will just take their advice. "

TheRickster wrote on Mar 2, 2009 10:24 PM:

" A local woman is sure the county is using these guys to get to bigger fish like on some TV shows. These are big enough and trouble enough to put away NOW! With the other cases they are due in court for, I believe they were catching up on some fine and bond money. Maybe some lawyer pay also. Caught before the plan could materialize.
I can honestly say I have never read any other name as much in the paper without prison time being an option. What does the law have to gain by these men being kept "at large" ? "

psflo wrote on Mar 2, 2009 9:08 PM:

" This is Peggy Florence. I am Jasmine Haslag's mother. Not sure if anyone remembers this or not, but Dale Olten Sr. is the man who was dating my daughter when she disappeared on June 17, 2007. I will say that I am glad to see these guys are FINALLY behind bars. Please, please, please, if anyone knows anything about my daughter, please call CrimeStoppers or the CCSD and tell them what you know. Even if it seems like nothing, it could be something that brings a whole new aspect to the investigation. "

" Awesome work Sheriff White and deputies and the other LE agencies involved! A special thank you to the newspaper delivery man who was on his toes and took action! This goes to prove what can be accomplished if the residents work with the sheriffs office(and other LE) when they see something that isnt quite right. I proudly state that this is why I voted again for Sheriff White. Hopefully the judicial system will now do their part, Probation has obviously not worked if they are quilty of this as charged.
Once again I would say to the son, you do NOT have to follow in your fathers' footsteps. You can CHOOSE to change your life, you are still young. "

" We keep a gun close also. And surveillance is a great tool. This whole thing just blows my mind. The kid is the one that broke into a home in Westview, backed a couple into their bedroom (while they called 911) and he gets off with a $100.00 fine. Crooks and drug dealers get to a point where they believe they are above the law. And why not? They weren't being punished at all. Until things change, my gun will be close at hand. "

" fishing01, I have not contacted Cole county, but I did talk to Callaway county and so far nothing yet. One thing though, had they been in my house when I come home that day we would be reading about them in the obituaries and not on this article. After the first robberies I have been carrying daily. That day I entered my house with my weapon drawn. so if they ever read this they may want to take note that it's just a matter of time before some home owner does them in and saves the judicial system the trouble. I have now also installed an alarm and video surveillance system in my home as well. These guys may not even be the robbers. "

" I live in the Tebbetts area in Callaway county. My home was robbed 4 weeks ago. They took between 12 and 15 thousand dollars worth of items from my home. This is the 3rd time in 3 years that my home has been robbed. I have pretty much given up on the police department out there. They do not have the man power to even come close to keeping law and order in Callaway county. I really wish there was a larger budget for law enforcment in this county. It's sad that my parents grew up out here and they lived with doors open and unlocked and now it's getting to the point of reminding me of when I grew up in St. Louis. "

We finally got rid of him when he got in the face of the manager b/c she told him to get off his a** and work or get out of the building. Every time I turned around he was calling in or someone was calling in for him because he was either sitting in jail, or he had court. They need to just lock the two of them up and leave it there. Nothings gonna change for these two. "

" I'm a gun owner and avid hunter so don't get me wrong here, but I think this story makes a good point.

NRA members and other gun fanatics have been telling us for years that gun control would take guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens and put them in the hands of criminals.

Question:

How many times do you see a story where some gun dealer has been selling guns out the back door to gang members? For me, it's never.

Conversely, how many times do you see a story like this where 2 or 3 tax-paying, law-abiding burglarized farmers almost armed 30 or 40 criminals? All the time. "
