Gov. Nixon creates stimulus idea Web site

By The Associated Press

What idea would you submit? Tell us in the forum below this article.

Published: Monday, February 23, 2009 3:01 PM CST
Gov. Jay Nixon wants your ideas about how to use Missouri's portion of the federal economic stimulus money.

Nixon launched transform.mo.gov on Monday to solicit ideas from residents, local governments, businesses and non-profits. Nixon says he hopes to gather as many ideas as possible from a wide range of sources.

People can submit general ideas or more detailed proposals, which require a proposed timeframe and an estimated number of new jobs.

Missouri is slated to receive about $4 billion from the stimulus package, though that amount does not include competitive grants the state might secure.

Nixon says the money will be used for education and job training, new technology and infrastructure.

" Education yes, gov't run education no. It's time to start funding choice. The parents will make a better choice than any bureaucrat for their kid. The mac sticking point will be religion, however mac, a parents choice is just that, you send yours to a montesoree school, we'll send ours to Catholic or Lutheran etc. The public schools will be forced to become competative, and everyone will benifit in the long run. Education, dead on balls right. "

" Where you're going Mac isn't bad, its the vehicle you want to use that I don't agree with. The government doesn't do anything efficiently. So much of that money for 'education' will be siphoned off into projects we don't all agree are necessary. Then so much of it goes to administer the projects. By the time you get anything to help the fifth grader struggling with math issues it barely covers the cost of the books and instructor.

The best idea for the increased tax package is to send it back. "

" I truly believe our (America's) only salvation is the investment and subsequent sale of our knowledge. We need to invest money ..... more money than we ever have x10 into ALL of our learning institutions from preschool to the university level.

We need the gov't to implement real and effective marketing campaigns to help convince our younger generations that this is priority for their future survival.

We need to muzzle the right's ridiculous and infectious philosophy with regard to higher learning institutions and public schools which tricks our children into believing it's more beneficial to learn about Jesus than it is to learn about business.

Bottom line... we need to become a country that understands just how-important-it-is-for-our-people-to-be-more-educated-than-any-other-people-in-the-world. "

" .........reiterating a portion of the "share your idea" I submitted at transform.mo.gov......

A large portion of this money needs to be devoted to education, because 2 things are certain. Firstly, we will come out of this recession, and secondly, manufacturing in the United States is dunzo! The last administration blatantly neglected its responsibility to keep corporations in check (based on this extremist philosophy that "free market will always correct itself") and we will now pay dearly for it. A portion of that 'pay' will be the decimation of manufacturing in this country (thanks Jr.) and we'll never retrieve it.
